He served as commanding officer of the 291st Combat Engineer Battalion in WWII and saw extensive action at the Battle of the Bulge. The 291st Combat Engineer Battalion built 70 bridges, with 19 of them built under enemy fire. Peregrin was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, Silver Star, and the Purple Heart. This copy was presented, in recognition of the approaching 1991 centennial of the formal organization of the School of Engineering, to Chancellor Gene Budig on July 18, 1989 by James O. Maloney, the Editor of the history, and three notable associates, Carl Locke, Marjorie A. Franklin, and (probably) Dwight Metzler. The University of Kansas School of Engineering, founded in 1891 is the oldest Engineering School in the State of Kansas, although engineering degrees were awarded as early as 1873. It is an ABET accredited, public engineering school located on the main campus of the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. In the U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges, 2013 issue, KU's School of Engineering was ranked 36th among public schools in the United States of America, making it the second highest ranked engineering school in Kansas. National rankings for individual graduate programs included Aerospace Engineering at 30th and Computer Engineering at 40th. The history of the University of Kansas can be traced back to 1855, when efforts were begun to establish a "University of the Territory of Kansas." Nine years later in 1864, together with the help of Amos Adams Lawrence, former Kansas Governor Charles L. Robinson, and several other prominent figures, the Kansas Legislature chartered the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. The university was initially funded by a $15,000 endowment on a 40-acre (160,000 m2) allotment of land from Charles Robinson and his wife Sara. The university commenced preparatory-level classes in 1866 and college-level classes in 1869. The establishment of the university was complicated by several issues, including debates over slavery, the location of the university, and financial issues.Gene A. Budig (born May 25, 1939) was the last president of the American League from 1994 to 1999, when the presidencies of the American League and the National League were abolished by Major League Baseball. Budig graduated from the University of Nebraska. Budig served as president of Illinois State University from 1973-1977 and of West Virginia University from 1977-1980 and was the chancellor of the University of Kansas from 1980-1994. A lecture hall at KU, Budig Hall, is named in his honor. Active in the Air National Guard, Budig retired at the rank of Major General in 1992. On June 8, 1994, Budig was named President of the American League. He served in that role for six seasons, before the position was officially abolished. In that role, Budig presented then-Yankee owner George Steinbrenner with the Commissioner's Trophy after the Yankees won the first World Series to be telecast by Fox in 1996, 4 games to 2. The trophy presentation was made in the Yankees' locker room at Yankee Stadium following Game 6. He also presented the trophy to the Yankees following their victories in 1998 and 1999. The position was abolished when Commissioner Bud Selig restructured Major League Baseball and eliminated the offices of American and National League President.
