The book was printed on a Vandercook press and handset in Eric Gill's 14 point Joanna. His Perpetua is the display face seen on the title page. A Gill Floriated Initial is used on page one. The paper is Mohawk Superfine Text, an archival quality paper. The pattern design used on the cover and endpapers was made for this edition by the wood engraver, John DePol. Incidentlly this volume is the fourth collaboration between John DePol and the Yellow Barn Press." 5 1/4 inches x 7 in., frontispiece portrait of Eric Gill by John DePol, title-page printed in dark blue and black; [6]pp., 15 pp., with the numbered colophon on the reverse of p. 15. A fine copy with the original prospectus loosely inserted. 300 ordinary copies were issued, numbered and signed by Powys and bound as this copy at 10s and 50 special copies, numbered 1-50, bound in quarter vellum, signed by Powys, and containing extra prints of the 2 engravings were issued at 30s. The prospectus shows the projected price for the ordinary copies (15s) crossed through and the new, lower price typed in. Although dated 1930 the book wasn't published until march 1931. --Evan Gill. Add to basketA deluxe copy from the first 50 issued in a black morocco binding and with a suite of additional engravings, lacking one image. Full black morocco binding, top edge gilt; a little scuffed to edges; offsetting from glue used to secure the front pastedown. Vignette title and five engravings in the text with tissue guards printed on untrimmed leaves. Signed by Enid Clay and 'Eric G' and numbered on the limitation leaf to the rear. On the final leaf is a pocket for the additional images which has been slit open along the right edge. Additionally there are loose images printed on thick paper of: Marionette; The Housewife; Benediction and The Young Girl's Room - lacking A Baby. These have two of their own paper folders, labelled in a calligraphic hand: 'Eric Gill Engravings for Enid Clay's "The Constant Mistress"'. PROVENANCE: from the collection of a Palestinian woman living in Switzerland in the 1980s whose sister knew Eric Gill. A very good copy of a scarce issue of this book.
