Condition: Very Good. A postcard (138 × 88 mm), with the pictorial letterhead of 'Piers Court | Stinchcombe Nr Dursley Glos.' on the verso; postally unused, but still in the original envelope addressed by Waugh ('Aubrey Ensor Esq | The Old Thatch | Thakeham | Pulborough | Sussex'). The letterhead, printed in brown, would appear to be designed by Reynolds Stone; he contributed the wood engravings to Waugh's 'The Holy Places' (1953). Minor pencil annotations to the recto of the card and the envelope; in excellent condition. Waugh's note reads in full: 'Very many thanks indeed for your charming letter of sympathy. My best wishes for Christmas and the next year, Evelyn'. Perhaps not surprisingly, because of the personal and intimate nature of the short message, the card was sent in the envelope, with the recto of the card left blank. The envelope is postmarked Dursley, 17 December 1954; Waugh's mother Catherine (1870-1954) died on 6 December. Aubrey Ensor was a teacher at Heath Mount Preparatory School when Evelyn Waugh was a day boy there (1910-1917). In 'My Brother Evelyn and Other Profiles' (1967), Alec Waugh writes: 'For nearly every artist there is someone outside the family, a schoolmaster, a parson, who at a very early age lengthens his horizon, opening windows on new landscapes. Aubrey Ensor did that for Evelyn'. [2 items]. Signed.
