Clean boards, with a tiny bit of pushing to the base of the spine. Top of the textblock is a little dust dulled, otherwise clean, fresh pages and clean unmarked pastedown front and back. No inscriptions. The dustjacket is bright with an unfaded spine. Slight rubbing to the edge of the spine fold at the front and corners and miniscule creasing to the bottom of the spine. Not price-clipped. Publisher's price of 15s. John Lodwick was a prolific writer throughout the 1950's, his life sadly cut short by an automobile accident in 1959. The story is centered on Asoc, a fictitious island on a lake in a Central African Republic, and run by an insane Spaniard. The dustjacket is designed by Donald Green. Overall, a really nice copy, in Near-fine condition. Rare to find now with such attributes.…

John Lodwick, 1916-1959, lived a chaotic, violent life, working first for the French Foreign Legion and later the Special Operations Executive and the Special Boat Service. A rogue by temperament, he served time in prison for bike theft and smuggling (one of his commanders described him as 'plausible, well-spoken but unscrupulous'), he adopted a certain hackishness by necessity, writing hastily and prolifically to stave off creditors. The Equator takes a fairly well-worn premise: an insane European who becomes king of a remote country (in this case a central African Island) and animates it with wry comedy, a large well-drawn cast of characters (diggers, porters, and fools, those staples of Shakespeare), and a final spiteful twist.…
