First Dell edition, mass market paperback with the cover slightly misaligned, has light bumps to the spine ends, mild sunning to the spine with very slight wear along the hinges, a couple tiny punctures to the tail of the first few pages, and a previous owner's name/brief note to the head of the first page. Otherwise, this is a solid, tight, bright and clean, Very Good+ copy.

Library rubber stamp in lower margin of title page. Fading to jacket spine. Unlikely that you can separate jacket from book without causing serious damage. Still, a reasonably attractive example of a notoriously scarce title. For a library book, this example is NOT a heavily read copy.

Book has some very light fading to bottom edges, pinpoint wear to corners, a very odd black sharpie mark (1.6 by .2) to upper right of front cover (hides a small scuff). rest of book is very clean and attractive, with a solid binding and clean pages. Dust jacket has some light wear to corners, two quarter inch chips with wear at bottom of spine, tiny chips and wear at top of spine, modest toning to white areas. otherwise clean and presentable, now protected in an archival cover.

Former owner's [Veterans Administration National Library] embossed stamp on the title page else a fine copy in dust jacket lightly sunned on the spine and with a hint of wear to the spine ends. Wrongly convicted and imprisoned in the brutal labor camp at Five Shadows, Corey Bowen is an innocent man. The camp is run by a sadistic tyrant for his own personal gain, it was a place of scorching sun, sweat, sudden and simmering hate. Bowen is determined to break out or die trying. The trackers have already caught him once, dragged him back through the mesquite and rocks, and beat him near death after his last attempt. This time, he?ll have help from a lady with murder on her mind and a debt to pay back. They say that breaking out of Five Shadows is impossible, but Bowen is a different breed?and this time he will go to any extreme to escape.

His first three hardcover books were all Westerns and have yet to be surpassed. Unmarked, tight and square. Signed neatly by author on bookplate laid in. Reddish brown boards clean with pretty sharp tips and darker brown lettering and illustration on front board of lit dynamite. Crimped spine ends. Price intact jacket is bright and clean with only light wear. Many of Leonards books have been used in film notably Hombre, 3:10 to Yuma, Out of Sight, Jackie Brown, Get Shorty and Valdez is Coming. After his Westerns he turned to crime fiction and was without equal in that field as well. We were lucky to have him. In mylar. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author.

PUBLISHER'S FILE COPY, so stamped to the front free endpaper - FILE COPY - together with the handwritten date, '7-8-57'. A VG+ copy possibly unread (slight spine fade; faint mark to leading edge of upper board; light dustiness and spotting to page edges) in like D/W (tiny chip to head of spine, another to top edge of front panel, slight dustiness and a couple of short closed tears held to the verso with archival tissue tape). The third of Leonard's Westerns for Hale, most of which, unlike the present example, went to libraries. A remarkable survival of a VERY RARE book. Elmore Leonard's scarcest book.

A near VG copy (boards showing a few minor marks, clear titles to spine, ex-library stamps and marks to paste-downs and title page; front free end-paper replaced, lacking half-title; corner torn from foot of first text page not touching text). In the VERY RARE D/W priced 8/6 net to the inside flap (as called for) also in near VG condition. The D/W has a strip of tape residue to the edge of the front and rear flaps. There are a couple of short edge tears and associated creases to the top edge of the front panel and minor loss and darkening to the head and tail of the spine not affecting any lettering. Extremely scarce in the First UK Edition this being the only copy in D/W that we have handled. There is only one other copy currently on the market signed and in a D/W for $6,500.

A beautiful dustjacket that is vibrant in color with light fading to the spine. The book is in nice shape. The binding is tight and the boards are crisp with minor wear to the edges. The pages are exceptionally clean, with no writing, marks or bookplates in the book. Overall, a lovely copy of this true first edition SIGNED by the author. We buy Elmore Leonard First Editions. First Edition indicated by matching publication dates on the title and copyright pages. The third of the author's three Houghton Mifflin hardcover westerns, from early in Leonard's career. He has gone on to become one of the most successful mystery novelists working today, and several of his works have been adapted to film. Ex-Library copy with usual library stamps and remnants. Book very good. DJ very good+. DJ price is $2.75.

Only a small number of hardcover copies of this edition were printed, and most of them went to libraries (when copies surface on the market they usually have replaced endpapers and remnants of library markings). A superior copy of a notable rarity, avidly sought by both western and mystery collectors.

A very presentable copy of what is, in our experience, perhaps the author's rarest title, much more difficult than the already-scarce American edition published by Houghton Mifflin the previous year. Very Good plus in a Very Good or better dust jacket. Faint ring stain on the front board, light foxing to the top page edges, else book is bright and clean. Jacket is chipped at the heel, with some associated shallow creasing, and several tiny closed tears at the extremities. Signed.
