First edition. 224pp. Eusebius of Caesarea (c.260-339 AD), also known as Eusebius Pamphilius, was a historian of Christianity, exegete, and Christian polemicist from the Roman province of Syria Palaestina. In about AD 314 he became the bishop of Caesarea Maritima. He is often referred to as the "Father of Church History" for his significant work, "Ecclesiastical History," which chronicles the early Christian church. This book does not claim to be a full account of the life and works of Eusebius; it sets out to draw attention to the many facets of his mind and interests, and to bring together some of the critical estimates of his work which have been put forward by scholars in the first half of the 20th century. The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean with the outline of two tape stains where a protective cover for the dustwrapper had probably been attached on the front and rear free endpapers. There is no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper is very good with some shelf wear and the spine is slightly faded. The spine ends are lightly bumped with small nicks at the top of the spine.

Hardcover. Condition: near fine. First edition. Octavo. xi, (5), 337, (1)pp. Indices and bibliography. Dark gray cloth stamped in silver, publisher's device on front cover. An ex-library copy with minimal rubber stamping on title & at bottom of text block, and a library pocket on rear pastedown. Essential reading for reconstructing early Christianity, the writings of Eusebius of Caesarea (ca. 260?340 C.E.) have held a central place for historians of early Christianity. Eusebius?s Ecclesiastical History frequently stands on the scholar?s shelf alongside the writings of Josephus or Philo of Alexandria. While apologists like Irenaeus and Origen have stood squarely in the spotlight, Eusebius has remained in the shadows. Kofsky contends that the value of Eusebius?s own apologetic and theological writings has been neglected. He corrects this deficit and invites us to see Eusebius as a ?contender for the faith? in his own right. To accomplish his goal, Kofsky takes us on a detailed tour of two of Eusebius?s key documents: Eusebius?s Praeparatio Evangelica and Demonstratio Evangelica. (Publisher) Contents: 1. Background -- Apologetics and polemics before Eusebius -- The Caesarean background -- The persecutions -- Porphyry's polemic against the Christians -- The contents of the fragments -- 2. Apologetics and polemics in non-apologetic and early apologetic-polemical works -- I. Apologetics in non-apologetic works -- The chronicle -- The ecclesiastical history -- The life of Constantine -- II. Early apologetic-polemical writings -- The general basic introduction and the prophetic extracts -- Against Hierocles -- Against Porphyry -- 3. Praeparatio Evangelica and Demonstratio Evangelica -- a single apologetic-polemical enterprise -- General plan, basic characteristics and principal questions -- Internal division -- The Jewish aspect of the Demonstratio Evangelica -- 4. The concept of Christian prehistory -- a central axis of polemic -- I. Development of the conception -- II. Major conceptual problems and their solutions -- The life of Jesus according to the law of Moses -- The numerous progeny of the patriarchs -- The problem of sacrifices -- The Christians' neglect of science -- a conceptual difficulty and polemical problem: the apologetic role of Socrates -- The concept of the development of polytheism and its complementary apologetic role -- 5. Prophecy in the service of polemics -- Pagan oracles and Hebrew-Christian prophecy -- The actualization of biblical prophecies -- Jesus the prophet -- The vague language of prophecy -- An example of apologetic interpretation of prophecy -- Conclusion. 6. Miracles: A major subject in Eusebius' polemics -- Eusebius' ambivalent attitude to miracles -- Miracles as proof of the divinity of Jesus and the truth of the Christian faith -- The difficulty in proving the divinity of Christ on the basis of miracles -- On those who reject the authenticity of Jesus' miracles -- On arguments that miracles depend on magic and sorcery -- On arguments alleging Jesus' weakness, wretchedness and cowardice -- 7. Minor apologetic-polemical arguments and issues -- The Roman Empire and the incarnation -- The persecutions -- On arguments concerning the late date and geographical remoteness of Jesus' appearance -- On criticism of the literary style of scripture, and contradictions between the Old and New Testaments, and between the Gospels -- On prophecy in the Book of Daniel -- Other implied arguments. 8. Tactics, rhetoric, and the role of Porphyry in the dual composition -- I. Tactics and rhetoric -- II. The role of Porphyry in the dual composition (PE-DE) -- Porphyry as supporting testimony -- A critique of Porphyry's views and inconsistencies -- 9. The theophany: The final apologetic statement -- General analysis -- Peace, empire, incarnation, and the success of Christianity -- Resurrection -- The fulfillment of the prophecies of Jesus as argument and proof. Volume 3 of the Brill "Jewish and Christian Perspective Series." (J&CP).
