Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. New York, crown quarto (10 by 7.5 inches). Volume I (Text): xxvi, 736 p.; Volume II (Illustrations): vii, [1], 1013 p. William King Gregory (1876-1970) was a noteworthy American zoologist and paleontologist who had a long and distinguished career at Columbia University and the American Museum of Natural History. He was a student of Henry Fairfield Osborn, and later became Osborn's research assistant. Renowned as a primatologist, Gregory's wide-ranging studies primarily focused on comparative anatomy, with particular significance to evolution. These volumes, arguably his most detailed, comprehensive, and celebrated work, are a veritable encyclopedia of evolutionary evidence and theory, from the most ancient fossil bacteria to humans and their recent relatives. Following the geologic time scale and advancing levels of zoological complexity, early chapters discuss sponges, corals, mollusks, brachiopods, echinoderms, trilobites, insects, other arthropods, and more. Greater attention in later chapters is devoted to fossil and living vertebrates: all kinds of fishes, amphibians, reptiles (including much on stem reptiles, dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and birds), and many chapters on fossil and recent mammals, primates, etc. There are literally 1000++ splendid illustrations in volume two: line drawings, "evolutionary tree" diagrams, engravings, photographs, fold-out charts, etc. Though this treatise lacks the molecular and genetic component of modern evolutionary studies, its foundational content is particularly appropriate in detailing the fossil and zoological data that is still very much scientifically relevant. The title is spot on! ***CONDITION: These volumes are fully complete, Fine or better, and bound in the original navy-blue publisher's cloth, with gilt titles on the front cover and backstrip. The cover corners and spine ends are like new, spine lettering bright. Joints and hinges solid, bindings firm. The text pages and illustrations are immaculate, fresh, clean and bright. No foxing or water stains; the only blemish is a .5 in. brown spot affecting two leaves in vol. two. Not ex-library; no evidence of previous ownership. This is the most handsome copy of this monograph that I have seen. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.
