First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Lamb, Lynton (illustrator). First Trade Edition. The author's first & "only serious attempt to capture a youthful audience." Originally written in 1883 & designed to be published in the American magazine, "Youth's Companion,'' but rejected, it was later published in installments in the "Household,'' after which time it was largely forgotten for 60 years. Then, it was released in book form in a limited edition in Sept. 1952. Our copy is the First Trade Edition, first printing, from Oct. of that same year. It tells a story of rural English boyhood & their adventures exploring a cave in Somersetshire. Hardcover small 8vo has burgundy cloth over boards with silver lettering to spine. Condition is Near Fine: just lacks that brand new crispness! Completely clean, binding strong & straight, pages creamy white with mild tanning to edges. Very mild rubbing to extremities & light corner bumping. The unclipped DJ is VG, with modest edgewear to both ends of spine & flap edges; nicely protected in new mylar cover free! Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have!
