First edition, reissue, with a cancel title identifying the author. After the Fable of the Bees, this is perhaps Mandeville's best-known work. On publication in 1720, it was almost immediately translated into French (1722), Dutch (1723) and German (1726). Dealing with various aspects of religious history and thought, Mandeville describes the development of the Christian church, and analyses the political status of the church in England. The book met with particular success in Germany. See Kaye I xxxi and note 3. Provenance. Signet Library, Edinburgh, with gilt stamp in centre of both covers.

Add to basket8vo, pp. [ii], xi, [ix], 240; last leaf of contents heavily foxed, else a clean copy, old calf, rebacked; with new endpapers. First edition. In this work Mandeville responds to ethical criticisms of his most important work, The Fable of the Bees - particularly the first part, An enquiry into the origin of moral virtue. He uses the same characters, Horatio and Cleomenes, and the same dialogue form as in the second part. The present work is in large measure a continuation of the earlier book, defending the cynical vein with a display of learning and reasoning on the nature of religion and power which many found hard to refute. 'If you can assure men of the Justice of their Cause. the Business is done. their own Wickedness will be no Obstacle to it' (p. 172). Kaye, Fable of the Bees, I xxxi. Provenance. Erased and illegible, but still visible, oval library stamp on last leaf; the same library stamp has been erased from the title, more effectively.
