This volume reprints Sitwell's modernist poems with the musical score by the composer William Walton, a family friend of the Sitwells. It also includes a vinyl of the first recorded performance, with the poems spoken by Sitwell and Con…stant Lambert. Walton (1902-1983) met the Sitwell family during his undergraduate degree at Oxford, where he became friends with Sacheverell. Sacheverell was convinced of Walton's talent, and after Walton failed his exams in 1919, Sacheverell invited him to live with the family in their Chelsea home. Façade was intended for musical performance, and before its publication Sitwell recited several poems to family and friends, accompanied by Walton. The first public performance of Walton and Sitwell's "entertainment" was in the Aeolian Hall, New Bond Street, on 12 June 1923. The audience included Virginia Woolf, Evelyn Waugh, and Noël Coward. The premiere, in which Sitwell declaimed the poems through a megaphone, was met with bemusement and derision; Sitwell herself recalled that, afterward, "I had to hide behind the curtain. An old lady was waiting to beat me with an umbrella." Despite the early condemnations, Sitwell continued to revise the work and later performances met with better reviews. Quarto. Original quarter black faux morocco, spine lettered in red and gilt, pictorial boards and endpapers by John Piper, top edge gilt. Housed in publisher's blue cloth solander box, lettered in gilt, with pocket enclosing 7-inch record of original 1929 recording. A fine copy in lightly faded box.
