The field exercises were first revised in 1824 by Henry Torrens. This volume also contains an 8pp catalogue of Clowes Military books. Old ink signatures of H L Cocker [dated 1893] and Lt. Ed. Quarter calf with gilt titles and decoration to spine, and marbled paper-covered boards. Calf scuffed, with crack to upper joint but holding firmly; minor loss at head of spine, and corners worn. Inner front hinge cracked, some corner-creasing to leaves. Numerous illegible ownership signatures in the same hand throughout; some marginal annotation, including 42nd Citadel Corfu. The 42nd (Royal Highland The Black Watch) were stationed in the Mediterranean, principally at Malta and Corfu through the late 1830's to mid 1840's. Detailed instructions to ensure the correct formation for exercises and inspections, with and without arms, and for the movement of battalions, brigades and lines including those for light infantry formations. Scarce.
