Yet 150 years later, our knowledge of the precise relationships of the bird faunas of these important islands remains only a little better than it was when Wallace was collecting in northern Borneo. Worse, the forests are now being destroyed, and if we do not docu-ment quickly which species occur where, the information content of the region may be lost for ever. One handicap in gathering a complete picture of the distribution of the birds of the region has been the paucity of regional field guides.
