Condition: UNSPECIFIED. Octavo, softbound (slick, full-color illus. wrappers), vii, 248 pp. Fine. From Introduction: Millennium is an old word that carries with it heavy historical, religious and anthropological freight. But the word 'century' (siecle in Frenc) is modern both in conception and in use. It is a quite different kind of time unit from the season, the reign or even the era. It was in the seventeenth century that the present and previous centuries began to be compared with each other, but it was not until the nineteenth that the phrase fin de siecle was first used. This was the period when history developed as a subject of research and of daily reference. Its time span was lengthened and its range broadened to cover economics and politics, society and culture. At the end of our twentieth century, which has defied most nineteenth-century forecasting of what it would be like, there is more concern about a new millennium than about a new century: in Britain, there is even a Millennium Fund looking for imaginative projects to support. In many quarters the arrival of a new millennium is awaited less with eager expectation than with a sense of resigned and even fatalistic inevitability, yet there have been strident warnings of imminent cataclysm.
