Contact seller4-star sellerSigned and inscribed by Aileen B. Chapman, Bicentennial ChairmanOctavo, green leatherette (hardcover), silver letters, 144 pp. Very Good in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear that includes light chipping. From dust jacket: This is an important book -- and a valuable one. Probably there has never been another…book quite like it. It is the history of Florida schools, told from a hundred different viewpoints, by the people most intimately involved in educational development. Teachers who devoted their lives to the instruction of youth possess credentials which qualify them to serve as experts on any panel considering school problems or planning school policies. They richly deserve to be listened to and to have their advice taken seriously. In this book, however, they are not sitting in solemn judgment nor trying to dictate what should be done. They simply report what happened to the schools in which they taught and what happened to the students. But between the lines of these brief reports there lies a wealth of priceless material which should be thoughtfully considered by everyone interested in our schools. We hasten to add, however, lest we frighten off any readers who may just wish to be informed or entertained, that these reports make delightful reading and are often amusing. Anyone who ever attended school, and of course that is all of us, can identify with the characters and situations described here. Perhaps those who attended only the most modern institutions will react with horror at the idea of walking miles to a rural schoolhouse with outside privies. Perhaps those who received their early education in rural schools will recall those days with nostalgia. But whatever the reaction, everyone can read these reports with sympathy and understanding. Typed Letter Signed on Florida State University Letterhead, Letter-size, VG.Provenance: Herb Yellin (1935-2014) was the highly respected publisher and founder of Lord John Press, considered by many to be one of the most important small presses of the 20th century. His close personal relationships with many signi…ficant writers resulted in an impressive number of unique, collectible, signed limited edition books. Working with some of modern literature's biggest names?Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, John Updike, Eudora Welty, and Joyce Carol Oates among them?and entertaining his personal fascination with Hollywood, Yellin was able to create a new realm for Lord John Press combining the two fields; several books, including The Lord John Film Festival, were the result.

Cloth. Condition: Very good. Handwritten letter. Large folio, blue cloth folder, title on label affixed to front cover. Full piece measures 11.5" x 17". Letter encased in archival sleeve. Previously folded, letter is two pages, with two archival repairs along the top fold. Dated June 27th, 1832, with postal stamp from the follow…ing day. Addressed to George S. Borwn, Esq of St. Mary's Georgia, with stamp and rate on cover. John Drysdale (1783-1845) served as Mayor of St. Augustine, Florida, from 1827-1830. He was an attorney by trade, also serving as an Alderman in 1823 and County Judge of St. Johns County. A unique piece of early Florida land speculation. In the case of United States v. Arredondo, decided in 1832, the United States Supreme Court addressed a land grant dispute stemming from the Adams-Onís Treaty of 1819, whereby Spain ceded Florida to the United States. The Arredondo case involved a claim by the Arredondo family, who sought confirmation of a Spanish land grant awarded before the territory's transfer to the U.S. The grant covered over 1.5 million acres in what is now Alachua County, Florida. The Court's decision, penned by Justice Joseph Story, upheld the validity of the Arredondo grant under the terms of the Adams-Onís Treaty, which recognized land grants made by Spain before the cession. This landmark case established significant legal precedent in U.S. property law, particularly regarding the recognition and confirmation of land titles and grants in territories acquired by the United States, setting a framework for the treatment of former Spanish land grants within American jurisprudence. Letter from Judge John Drysdale of St. Augustine, Florida in 1832, after the United States vs. Arredondo confirmed his ownership of 3,131 acres of land in Florida. In this letter, he requests that attorney George S. Brown of St. Mary's, Georgia, sell (illustrator). Signed.

This copy is inscribed on the title page to Roosevelt's Secret Service Agent, who accompanied him on the cruise: "For Paul Hart, from Franklin D. Roosevelt." This copy is from the private estate of Paul M. Hart, Missouri City, Texas, February 2021. Possibly the scarcest of all the Roosevelt cruise logbooks. From Halter's research, there were a total of 17 logbooks, issued between 1934-1945. They were all privately printed, with the authorship being unknown for each volume. It is suspected that FDR military aide Edwin M. "Pa" Watson authored this volume, but there is no direct attribution. One other copy of Log of the Cruise of President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Dry Tortugas Florida appeared in the 1996 Glenn Horowitz sale, and we can find one copy held by the Library of Congress. This fishing trip off the coast of Florida aboard the presidential yacht Potomac included visits to Miami and Fort Jefferson. The President was accompanied by his son James Roosevelt, Harold Ickes, Edwin M. Watson, recently widowed Harry Hopkins and twelve staff members. The President was suffering from a tooth infection during the trip, but was in good spirits. Soon after the trip concluded, Harry Hopkins was admitted to the hospital with stomach cancer and required life-saving surgery. Log Of The Cruise Of President Franklin D. Roosevelt To Dry Tortugas Florida, a limited publication, inscribed to his lead Secret Service Agent, Paul Hart. (illustrator). Signed.

See the entries on Tonyn and Paterson in the Oxford DNB, the latter stating of the recipient of this letter: 'On 28 December 1799 he married, at St Pancras chapel, London, Jane Ellen Yeats (1771/21846), daughter of David Yeats, formerly registrar of East Florida, and sister of his first cousin, the physician Grant David Yeats.'…Paterson's mother was a Tonyn, and he was also related to the Marchmont family, the Earl having been his early patron. The present item is 3pp, 4to, and a bifolium. It is in fair condition, with the customary loss from the breaking of the red wax seal, which is present with an impression of a head. The letter has been folded for postage and filing, and is minuted: '1830 / To Adml Paterson [sic] relating to Marchmont family'. In pencil, presumably by Lady Paterson: 'To be kept E: J: P.' Addressed, with three postmarks, to 'Mrs. Admiral Paterson / East Cosham / Portsmouth'. Signed 'Warren H Sands'. The letter begins: 'Madam / Major General Patrick Tonyn late Governor of East Florida, the Revd Charles Tonyn Parson of Radnage, John Tonyn Commander of Cavalry in the East India Company Service & Lieut George Home of his Majestys Navy son of the deceased Mr John Home of Abbey St Balhans & sometime minister of the Gospel at Greenlaw & the heirs male of their respective Bodies, are called as Heir of Entail in the destination of the Entail of the Estate of Marchmont. It is the intention of Sir W P Hume Campbell the present proprietor of that Estate immediately to Petition Parliament for an Act of Parliament to [ffee?] out the portion of the Estate in and around the Town of Greenlaw for the purpose of extending the Town, to obtain this Act of Parliament he requires the consent of the Heirs of Entail in existence.' As Sands understands Lady Paterson is 'a near connection of the four heirs of Entail', he asks if she can confirm that 'the three first died unmarried, & that Mr Home tho' married left no family', and who succeeded to any of their property. He is writing to her after having 'applied to my friend Miss Wauchope of Niddrie on the same subject'.

Contact seller5-star sellerAmerican postwar economic growth and tourism throughout Clearwater Florida, photographed by local photographer George Fulmer, showing how the Sunbelt expansion operated through roadside motels, downtown retail, waterfront leisure, automobile traffic, and service businesses during the rapid growth of the 1950s. The photographs ce…nter on the commercial circulation that made Clearwater function as a visitor city, spanning rate signage pitched to seasonal travelers, motel courts arranged for car access, beach parking filled with mid-century automobiles, storefront streets where shoppers and pedestrians occupy the sidewalk, and crowded dock scenes tied to marine recreation. Clearwater had developed as a resort community by the 1890s, and local historical sources note that by 1957 it was known as the fastest growing city in America, making this group a concentrated record of the urban and commercial expansion that turned Pinellas County's Gulf Coast into a major tourism economy. Photo archive of 72 items including 38 silver gelatin photographs and 34 negatives, ranging from 3" x 4" to 4" x 5", contained in 10 photo studio envelopes. Most negatives are duplicates of the print photographs while some are unique images. Clearwater, Florida, c. 1950s. Repeated and variant views show commercial properties and tourist infrastructure from multiple angles, including motels with bold seasonal signage reading "SUMMER RATES $5.00 PER COUPLE FROM APRIL 15 TO NOV. 15," "20 ROOMS $4.00 DOUBLE Apr. 1st-Dec. 1," and "REASONABLE RATES 4 UNITS $5.00 DOUBLE APRIS-JUN." Several prints and negatives picture motel exteriors, room interiors with twin beds and lamps, a modernist multi-story lodging property with projecting sign and glass-fronted office, and a low roadside restaurant or motel building beneath a large fish sign. Other images move into the wider tourist economy: downtown street scenes with McCrory's and Maas Brothers Television signage, a storefront reading "Clearwater's American Casuals," a Parsons Paint Co. facade, a Brookside Service Travel Gas station advertising regular gasoline at 26 cents, and waterfront scenes with rows of parked cars, palm-lined drives, crowded piers, and a dock packed with men, women, and children waiting or disembarking. The negatives preserve the same emphasis on repeated commercial views, indicating studio production for advertising, promotional, or business use; the group also retains photo studio envelopes inscribed by George Fulmer. These photographs place Clearwater within the broader postwar reordering of Florida's Gulf Coast, where automobile ownership, road travel, beach recreation, and commercial real estate development produced the built environment commonly identified with Sunbelt growth. Fulmer's images are strongest where they show the interdependence of businesses rather than isolated structures: lodging needed seasonal pricing and motor access, downtown retail depended on pedestrian density and curbside traffic, waterfront tourism required parking and dock circulation, and roadside services converted through-travel into local spending. Visible edge wear, light curling, and routine handling marks to some prints and negatives; studio envelopes present. Overall good condition. A substantial visual record of how Clearwater's postwar visitor economy operated on the ground, with concrete evidence of the businesses, prices, streets, interiors, and waterfront traffic that made tourism an urban system rather than a backdrop.
