Limited Edition. Book condition: NM - Near Mint. Full Colour illustrations. I Fiori del Male (The Flowers of Evil), the masterpiece of the cursed poet Charles Baudelaire, meets the sanguine and humorous pencil of the Michelangelo of Comics, Tanino Liberatore. A limited edition of 500 copies, hardcover in imitation leather, with a print autographed by Tanino Liberatore. The consequence of this artistic embrace is a precious hardback volume containing 29 poems chosen by Liberatore - the heart of Baudelaire's work - enriched with as many magnificent illustrations. The protagonists of the events evinced by the poet Baudelaire come to life with the powerful strokes of the author of Ranxerox who gives new life to this immortal masterpiece. The volume also includes a section of preparatory sketches drawn in charcoal which show, in all their delicacy, the genesis of the creative process with which the author decided to tackle one of the greatest French classics. The most intimate and scabrous sexual impulses, death, drugs, blood, everything mixes together and strengthens each other in a continuous exchange between poetic verses and evocative illustrations in a volume that will leave readers speechless. This copy is numbered (#126/500), signed and remarqued and features a signed and numbered print. 108 pages. Size: 9" x 13" (230mm x 325mm). (1.5 FLOWOFEVIL01).

Hardcover. Condition: Very fine. Folio. (34)pp + 10 platinum prints, each one signed by Hosoe, interpolated + 1 additional print, likewise signed, housed in separate folder. Hosoe's surrealist images capture juxtapositions in human bodies one to another or to objects. The stark contrasts between black and white in the service of eroticism evoke Robert Mapplethorpe, while the presentation of the body as architecture and letterform recalls Man Ray's images of Nusch for his and Paul Eluard's Facile. A suitable pairing of influences, given the ecstatic but tortured nature of Baudelaire's splenic excursus on the modern condition. And immense project, composed in Monotype Walbaum by Michael and Winifred Bixler, with typography and presswork executed by Michael Russem and Mollie Zamoni at the Kat Ran Press. Bound by Peter Geraty in matte black anodized aluminum boards backed in black leather, with Japanese title in glossy black at upper cover. Very fine. Housed in silk-covered folding case. With the original shipping case. One of 65 copies, signed by Hosoe, editor John Wood, and publisher Steven Albahari.

From the publisher: "John Wood suggested to Eikoh Hosoe that we pair his work with the poet, Charles Baudelaire, and Eikoh told John that Baudelaire was his favorite poet. They each initially selected 11 poems---9 of them matched! Eikoh and I spent a full day, as John Stevenson hosted us at his then Platinum Gallery in Chelsea, for the signing ritual of the platinum prints and the colophon pages. Eikoh was methodical in signing all of his prints. He would sign for an hour and then close his eyes for 15 minutes or so. It was a real dance and an honor to watch. I admire him and his demeanor, which is not unlike what I would expect if I were to meet the Buddha. In fact, I believe I did. -Steven Albahari". Signed by Author(s).
