Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD). Signed and inscribed by the author on the front end paper: 'For John Jessup, a loyal friend from a mis-spent (?) youth, and a 'former naval person,'-- in tribute to his fine career achievements-- and in appreciation of his interest and support of my enthusiasm for the magnificent island of Formosa, Taiwan. George Carrington, 1/19/78.' You can see the blue covers of the book in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The spine is in excellent condition. The cover edges are in excellent condition, two tiny spots on the front bottom one, no rubbing. The corners are in excellent condition, no rubbing. The page edges look very good. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are very clean. Scrolling through the text, I didn't find any soiling at all. There's a light spot off the top edge of the first few pages, disappearing by the time one reaches the dedication page. You can see this small spot just off the top edge of the signed page (second photo). I didn't see any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corner creases, no placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And the author's signed inscription represents the only writing to be found anywhere. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. It is in very nice condition. The white flaps look very good as well. The jacket is not priced or clipped. Inscribed by Author(s).

Reprint, stapled. Condition: Gut. pp. 443-447, 1 fig., suppl. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Supplement: R. J. Rowland Jr., Another anachronism in the Historia Augusta, LCM 2(1977), p. 59. - Binding a bit bumped, light margins, author's name underlined on cover, 4 very small red annotations, otherwise clean. - From the text: Several times in the course of her comprehensive analysis of the inscriptions of Roman Britain,1 M. Biro refers to the epigraphic attestation of the presence of foreigners in Britain (pp. 15, 22, e.g.) ; however, because she did not attempt to analyze the evidence, the following observations might be in order. There are two types of foreigners in any province of the Roman Empire : 1) those who are from the province in question, but from a location different from the one where they are attested, and 2) those who are not from that province but are a) from a different province or even b) from outside the borders of the empire. It goes without saying that, for an area like Britain, much of the population was ultimately of foreign (i.e., non-British) extraction and that most of the administrative and military personnel was foreign; however, it is my purpose here to discuss only those foreigners whose place of origin is specifically attested epigraphically. - Wikidata: Robert Joseph Rowland, Jr., American classicist and historian (1938-2007).
