Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. This copy is extremely rare, and signed by the author on the front flyleaf: "Francis Dwight VanValkenburgh, Kent's Hill. Maine. Sept. 13. 1914." VanValkenburgh was a member of the Little Rock and Louisiana Conferences of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The book's introduction is by Rev. H. C. Morrison, President of Asbury College, and editor of the Pentecostal Herald. Although we're unable to say for sure, the location of "Kents Hill, Maine" VanValkenburgh noted within his signature, suggests he may have had affiliation with the Maine Wesleyan Seminary, now known as Kents Hill School. At the time, Kents Hill was a prominent Methodist-affiliated institution, driven by high intellectual and religious activity. Given the author's theological focus, it is possible that he served there in some capacity, but again, we cannot definitively make this claim with certainty. It was also common for clergy and educators of the period to move between New England's academic centers and the "Holiness" movements' publishing hubs in the South and Midwest. This work provides a defense and explanation for why there are specifically four canonical Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), in the New Testament. Very rare, only one edition in sixteen libraries was found of this book on OCLC, #8362211.Bound in navy publisher's cloth with white stamped lettering on the cover and spine. Author's signature on the front flyleaf. Frontispice portrait of Rev. F. D. VanValkenburgh in black and white. 102 pp. CONDITION: Mild external wear with some erosion of the lettering on the cover. Discolored endpapers. Leaves have lightly toned throughout. Unmarked except for the author's notations and a previous owner's name stamp within the endpapers and title page. Binding is solid. A very nice, very special, rare copy. Full refund if not satisfied. Signed by the Author.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good +. Third Edition. A Plain Commentary on the Four Holy Gospels, Intended Chiefly for Devotional Reading was written by John William Burgon (1813?1888), an English Anglican priest and Dean of Chichester, and was first published in 1855. The commentary is known for its clear, straightforward style and its focus on devotional reading, making it accessible to both scholars and laypeople.Author John William Burgon was a respected Anglican cleric, scholar, and Dean of Chichester Cathedral from 1876 until his death. He was known for his conservative theological views, especially his strong defense of biblical inerrancy and the Byzantine text-type of the New Testament. His most famous contribution to Christian scholarship is his defense of the traditional Greek text, which formed the basis for many Bible translations, including the King James Version.A delightful, slightly mysterious, and warm inscription from the author in dipped antiquarian ink on the front flyleaf reads: "For the acceptance of Annie Harvey - whose happiness will be ever dear to me, though she may call herself by any other name - from her friend, The writer of the Commentary. JWB", and is dated "Advent A.D. 1887". Third edition, 1877. This four volume complete set on The Four Gospels, is beautifully and uniquely bound in matching, full leather. Covers are tree-calf leather with a rectangular panel and blind tooled decoration is at the center of each board. Gilt lining and ornamentation along the edges. Hubbed spines bear five raised bands and are profusely ornamented in gilt, each with a red and black leather label stamped with gilt lettering. Red top stain. Gilt tooled decoration along the inner boards at the edge. Marbled endpapers. On a shelf standing side by side, this set spans 6.5 inches.Volume I: St. Matthew. xxxii, 712 pp.Volume II: St. Mark. 396 pp. Volume III: St. Luke. 648 pp.Volume IV: St. John. 940 pp. CONDITION: A stunningly handsome antiquarian set, we rarely see ornamentation such as this panel decoration / leather treatment, present on these volumes. Mild external wear with light chipping at the head and foot of each spine. The back board has been replaced in similar style on Volume I, but the pattern is speckled rather than tree calf. Hinges are strong and the binding is sound and tight. Leaves have ever-so-lightly toned, and are completely unmarked except for the author's inscription, and bookseller notation in pencil on the front flyleaf of Volume I. An absolutely beautiful set and valued addition to any pastor or theologian's library. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the size and weight of this set, an additional shipping charge may apply, and will be delivered with "signature required" upon delivery. Full refund if not satisfied. Quarter Leather. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Paper covered boards with a leather spine. 130 pp. SIGNED, with a lengthy inscription by Marilla Ricker on the first endpaper. The inscription reads in part, "So far as I've heard no Christian has arisen to state that the morals of the Rev. Clarence Richeson were contaminated by reading the works of Paine or Ingersoll. The Rev. (claims?) to be a product of the Christian bible and he's still talking of his god and his bible." Ricker is referring to Clarence Richeson, an on and off again minister for a variety of congregations who apparently suffered many bouts of insanity, and was hospitalized several times. He also was engaged to many young women, sometimes several at once. In 1911 he poisoned and murdered Avis Linnell and was sentenced to death. He was executed in early 1912. Given that the reverend was alive until early 1912, it is possible this was inscribed sometime in late 1911. A collection of four essays on four figures in history: Robert G. Ingersoll, Thomas Paine, John Calvin and Jonathan Edwards, as well as an essay asking "What is Prayer?" Ricker reflects on Robert G. Ingersoll, his agnosticism and skill as an orator, as well as his advocacy for freethought, and questions Theodore Roosevelt's criticisms of Thomas Paine, among other subjects. Marilla M. Ricker was the first woman admitted to the NH bar as well as being admitted to the bar in Washington DC in 1882. She pushed for prison reform, and worked free of charge for many of her clients. Ricker was also a strong advocate for women's suffrage, being the first woman to attempt to vote in New Hampshire, arguing that she had a right to do so as a property owner in Dover, NH. She also was a key figure in the freethought movement. VERY GOOD condition. Minor soiling and edgewear to the covers. Leather rather scuffed along the hinges. Minor toning in the interior.
