Quarter vellum with green and tan marbled paper over boards. Spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Matching marbled paper covered slipcase. Handsomely printed by Giovanni Mardersteig in Dante type on handmade paper by Fratelli Magnani in Pescia using a 19th century handpress at the Officina Bodoni in Verona. Colophon with Officina Bodoni device printed in red. Signed by T. S. Eliot in ink.____CONDITION: Book: Fine condition. Vellum spine clean and bright, gilt titling sharp and well preserved. Text block firm and square, all hinges intact. Small ex-libris (6.5 x 3.5 cm or 2 1/2 x 1 3/8") on front pastedown. Rubbing to lower corner tip of front cover. Otherwise a fine copy throughout. Slipcase: VG+. All seams intact, small bump at foot of spine, head of spine and corner tips very lightly rubbed, small areas of paper loss at lower front and upper rear corners of slipcase and base of slipcase, otherwise well maintained.____DISCUSSION: Four Quartets is the defining work of the second half of Eliot's career and his most important work after The Waste Land. The four meditations reflect both Eastern and Western influence combined with Eliot's brand of Catholicism. The quality, book design and style are identical to the Officina Bodoni edition of The Waste Land with Four Quartets being slightly taller in height. A highly collectible copy with very minor flaws as described and photographed.____NOTE: Estimated international shipping cost with USPS International Priority EXPRESS Mail with tracking to most locatopms in the United Kingdom and Europe is $ 65 U.S. dollars. First edition, Signed/Limited. "Text Typeface Ink Paper Binding," the five essential elements of book design according to Giovanni Mardersteig (1892-1977), the finest small press printer of the 20th century. The Four Quartets (1943) was Eliot's favorite and final collection of poetry written over the course of 6 years. "At the still point of the turning world", the place where our beginnings and our endings meet, the song of the poet is meditative, musical, mesmerizing. The beauty of the book is Mardersteig's enduring achievement, his work is simple and sublime and always true to the text. His lovely typeface Dante, printed on a Dingler handpress on Fratelli Magnani paper and bound by Chelsea Bindery, here is a place where words and music move, a true collector's choice. The name Officina Bodoni (1922-1977), located in Verona for most of its lifespan, was an homage to Gianbattista Bodoni (1743-1813) best known for his namesake typeface and revered as "the sovereign printer among those of his kind." Signed by T.S. Eliot. Limited to 290 copies, of which this is #189. Very near fine with a few light, small specks spine in near fine publisher's slipcase, with light rubbing to extremities. Marbled paper-covered boards over white vellum spine, in matching publisher's slipcase.
