sewn PAPERBACK, very good, only lightly scuffed covers. INSCRIBED To Professor Albert Kohlmeier with sincere regards, and SIGNED Edward D. Seeber. SEEBER, EDWARD D. On the threshold of liberty; journal of a Frenchman's tour of the American Colonies in 1777. Translated from the original ms. by Edward D. Seeber. Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1959, x, 172pp., . AN INTERESTING ASSOCIATION COPY OF INDIANA UNIVERSITY HISTORY PROFESSORS. - Indiana University publications. Humanities series ; no. 43. - Seeber was Professor of French at Indiana University until 1967: "primary interests centred on eighteenth-century French literature and thought, he developed an interest in the travel literature of that period. As was the custom then in smaller departments, he taught courses in many fields. He early prepared manuals of style as a guide for research in foreign literatures, manuals which for many years were best sellers at the Indiana University Press. His interest in first quality research and in its presentation in scholarly form led him into editorial work with the Indiana University Humanities Series and encouraged faculty and students alike to seek his editorial counsel" - Albert L. Kohlmeier 1883-1964, was an institution at Indiana University, teaching there in some capacity from 1911 to 1964.

Paul Lucien Maze (1887-1979) was an Anglo-French painter. He is often known as "The last of the Post Impressionists" and was one of the great artists of his generation. During the First World War, Maze met Winston Churchill in the trenches and their shared love of painting led to a lifelong friendship. At the outbreak of the WWI Maze attempted to join the French army but was deemed unfit. He then offered his services to the British and became an interpreter with the British cavalry regiment, the Royal Scots Greys. During the retreat from Mons, Maze became separated from the Royal Scots and narrowly avoided being captured by the Germans but was taken prisoner by a British unit. His position with the Royal Scots Greys was unofficial and his lack of documentation and his odd uniform led the British to think he was a spy, and was sentenced to death. On his way to face the firing squad, Maze was recognised by an officer from the Royal Scots Greys who happened to be passing and who quickly secured his release. He joined the staff of General Hubert Gough, where he undertook reconnaissance work to produce accurate drawings of enemy positions and other military objectives. In this book Maze writes of his experiences of the action that he saw on the Western Front. There is an introductions by Winston S. Churchill. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with blue titling and blue, white, and red stripes. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards and a small white stain near the top corner of the rear board. The spine ends are bumped with a little bit of damage to the cloth and there is a split in the cloth of about 3/4" on the bottom and a split of about 1" on the top of the rear spine edge. The contents are tight and clean with the following inscription from the author on the half-title page: "To a brother "Grey", To a brother "brush", To a good friend - Paul Maze - 1947". The front free endpaper has been signed 'Haig'. From the library of Dawyck Haig RSA (the 2nd Earl Haig) Haig being the brother 'Grey', 'brush', friend referred to in the inscription. Inscribed and Signed by the au.

English army officer and agent in the film business. Long and informed summary of 'the necessary points of our conversation'. Begins with description of Indian film industry: 'I have checked with India House these figures, and discovered that my sources of information are far more up to date than the Government's'. He encloses (not present) one of the stories he has found to 'make into Arabic films': 'Enslaved' by the Poet Laureate John Masefield. 'I have his written permission to make it into an Arab film'. Concludes: 'don't forget, that an extremely inferior American poet wrote, in very bad blank verse, a poem called "The White Cliffs of Dover" which was made into a very successful film. I am sufficiently English to hope that France will make a fine film of a poem by the English Poet Laureate; because it has never occurred to English firms to bother about the riches that are lying on their book shelves (if any).' Signed in pencil 'Gerald | G Wynne Rushton'. Discoloured by rust from paperclip.
