Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. This edition of "Algernon Charles Swinburne : Personal Recollections", by his Cousin Mrs. Disney Leith, was published by G. P. Putnam's Sons in New York in 1917. It is the First American Edition. Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837 - 1909) was an English poet, novelist, playwright, and critic who was connected to the Pre-Raphaelite movement. His poetic and prose output was considerable, frequently alluding to classical and historical persons (Sappho and Catullus were favorites). Many of the subjects to which he was attracted, and about which he wrote, were controversial . even taboo at the time. Indeed, he was strongly aligned with the Decadent School. These things, coupled with his own eccentric behavior caused him to be severely criticized and caricatured. As Swinburne strove to establish his bad boy image, he was an easy target. His poetry, however, was serious, and frequently of a very high sort, and was considered by some critics to be often profound in his writing. The book presented here was written by a family member, and includes extracts from some of Swinburne's private letters. There is a handsome frontispiece which is a replica of a photograph of the poet at age 25. There is a "Prefatory Note at the beginning of the book which states : "The following 'Recollections' (with the verses 'A Year's Mind') appeared originally in the April number of the 'Contemporary Review' in 1910. They have been revised and considerably expanded since they first appeared, and in their amended condition are now at length given to the world." A large part of the book consists of excerpts from his correspondence - and through those we experience his tours through Europe, his time at Oxford University, his interactions with the Pre-Raphaelites, (particularly Dante Rossetti and his wife) and Swinburne's own family and personal life. TITLE : Algernon Charles Swinburne : Personal Recollections by his Cousin AUTHOR : Mrs. Disney Leith (Mary Charlotte Julia Leith - née Gordon, 1840-1926) IMPRINT : G. P. Putnam's Sons PLACE : New York DATE : 1917 EDITION : First U.S. Edition STATUS : Out of Print - OP PHYSICAL DETAILS : trade Hardcover; contains 8 photographs on calendered paper (including frontispiece, with attached guard tissue; has the Editor's Postscript, an Appendix, and an Index; [x] + 262 pages , plus six pages of publisher's list. approximately 5 1/4" x 8 1/4" (8vo); maroon, cloth covered binding with gilt lettering on front board and spine; T. E. G. (Top edge gilt). CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book that shows wear, but which remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR -- Spine is darkened, with lettering having lost its sheen; spine extremities are compressed, displaying fraying and moderate abrasion; there is a small damp stain at the bottom fore-edge corner of the front boards; lettering on front is still bright. The rear board has a similar damp stain at the bottom fore-edge corner; else the boards are clean with but modest surface rub.Top edge gilt is quite rubbed, but still has a bit of sheen; fore and bottom text-block edges are clean. BINDING -- Not as tight as when issued, as the leaves open widely . The hinges just starting, & the paper over the front hinge is partially split (at the foot) - the whole affair is fairly solid. INTERIOR -- I spotted some barely perceptible pencil erasures on the rear free end-paper, and one of the final blank pages; frontispiece and guard tissue display light foxing; there are various small spots, smudges and light foxing through the book, but nothing egregious - the whole being basically clean and free of marking. On the front free end-paper is an inked address with a personal, complex monogram which I have not deciphered (other than the date, which is a part of the monogram : 1926) - under the monogram is a printed place of residence : Byram Shore, Port Chester, New York.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Halftone Photographs (illustrator). 1st Edition. A Gentleman with a Duster was the pen name that Edward Harold Begbie hid behind for his book, "The Glass of Fashion : Some Social Reflections" which is, in a way, a Jeremiad against the modern world .a diatribe against the 'nouveau riche' and the encroaching vulgarity of style, which Mr. Begbie feared was steamrollering over British society like an unstoppable juggernaught . Of particular offense to Mr. Begbie's sensibilities was Dame Margot Asquith, who had just written a sort of tell-all memoir, which caused no end of indignation and dyspeptic choler. Begbie was "triggered" by Margot Asquith's style. In fact, going against tradition , whereby a frontispiece was reserved for someone or something honored (or the author), the book's frontispiece features a photograph of Lady Asquith, wearing her latest choice in fashion (Begbie admitted that he found her "disgusting"!) . I must say her clothing style does seem dreadful. But Begbie was railing against more than simple bad choice in personal apparel, he was going after the entire sense of modernity, speeding along, as it were with no thanks to tradition. A very fascinating book, and Mr. Begbies introduction, in which he sets out with a full broadside of unmuffled indignation, is worth the price of admission. Mrs. Terry's husband (d. 1908) was pastor of the Westminister Presbyterian Church PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Trade Hardcover; eight photographic, plate illustrations printed on calendered paper, including frontispiece with tissue guard; [xiv] + 176pages, plus four pages of publisher's promotional text; 6" x 9"; cloth-covered boards colored dark green, with gilt lettering on spine. CONDITION -- GOOD -- This is a previously owned book -- X-LIBRARY -- Which remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted: EXTERIOR - Catalog number inked on spine; spine extremities are compressed and frayed' spine surface somewhat dulled, as id the gilt lettering; boards have scattered small spotting and moderate surface rub; bottom edges of boards are moderately abraded (shelf-rub); boards are free of library makings; text-block edges are mildly weathered, else clean and clear of library markings. BINDING - The book has obviously been read and thus is hardly as tight as when issued, the leaves opening widely; however no leaves are detached or loose, and the whole remains fairly solid. The paper over the end-hinges are not split. INTERIOR - Library stamps on front and rear paste-downs; remains of lending card attachment on rear paste-down. Previous owner's name and address label affixed to front free end-paper. End-papers are considerably foxed. A few more interior leaves have foxing, but to a much lesser extent; The tissue guard over the frontispiece is partly detached. The interior likely has some small spots or smudges, but, upon perusal none were obvious. Basically the interior is clean and presentable. The photographs present brightly.
Hardcover. 165p., frontis portrait as called for, first edition hardbound in 8x5 inch black cloth boards gilt-titled on spine-panel's printed green fields, enclosed in the dust jacket. Top edge tinted green (a pleasant touch), a nice production. A solidly "good" copy.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. Jan Bols (illustrator). 1st Edition. This is "The Story of Wagner's Lohengrin" bu Angela Diller. The book was published in 1932 by G. Schirmer in New York. Note the stunning frontispiece art which reproduces a linocut by artist - Printmaker Jan Bols. The book is essentially a work designed for further appreciation of "Lohengrin" by music students; thus there is a considerable amount of printed music. Angela Diller discusses each musical theme (or motive - there are 21 motives from the opera examined in this book .) As well as that Diller has added four easy piano transcriptions by Wagner to further enlarge the students understanding. The frontispiece is a remarkable picture of Lohengrin (the Swan Knight) majestically standing with his sword in a giant scallop shell which is being towed by a white swan. King Ludwig of Bavaria named his amazingly fanciful castle, 'Neuschwanstein' , after the Swan Knight, Lohengrin, and everybody knows the bridal chorus of this opera . "Here Comes the Bride". On the front cover there is an old stamp from a long defunct school (actually the original school was split up into separate parts). This old stamp, contemporary with the book, is not very legible. There are no other marks of ownership. I have personally verified the deaccessioned status with the village library.
