First and only edition of this selection of some of Fuller's more technical essays of the period, previously published in various professional journals. Moderately well-represented institutionally, 11 copies on Library Hub, but scarce commercially. "This book being much less pretentious and easier to follow, probably had far greater influence than the metaphysical Foundations [of a Science of War]. It was, for instance, translated into Spanish and published in Madrid in 1929, and was given two reviews in the RUSI Journal" (Trythall, p. 155). In these technical and doctrinal outings Fuller was intentionally writing for a readership of junior officers, the commanding officers of the future, "As regards my senior critics and traducers I care nothing, for none of my books are for them - they are past praying for; but I should like to hear what the junior people think, though it will; take 30 years before we get a true junior outlook, at present it is so contaminated with spittle-licking" (quoted in Reid, p. 152). Armorial bookplate of Roderick Gwynne Lawrence (1908-1976), 4th/7th Dragoon Guards, Royal Armoured Corps, who passed out of the Royal Military Academy in the year of publication, served as deputy director of freight movement at the War Office during the Second World War. Brian Holden Reid, J. F. C. Fuller: Military Thinker, 1987; Anthony John Trythall, 'Boney Fuller'. The Intellectual General 1878-1966, 1977. Octavo. Diagrams to the text. Original blue cloth, lettered in dark blue on the spine and on the front board within single fillet panel. Just a little rubbed at the extremities, spine a touch sunned, free endpapers browned, edges of the text-block toned and a few pages with corners crimped, overall very good.
