The complete Italian suite of plates from the series Galerie Royale de Costume. This rare series, with a total of approximately 200 lithographs, was published in issues- each section was dedicated to a specific nation. The present issue, made up of 50 plates, shows the costumes of Italy, with each plate accompanied by a caption describing where the subject come from. There is no auction record of a complete copy and the bibliography Colas (1163) says no complete copy is known. Colas also says the complete series should be 245 plates but the German bibliography Lipperheide (60) says 201 plates. HOWEVER ALL AGREE THE ITALIAN SECTION IS COMPLETE WITH 50 PLATES. A VERY SCARCE COLOUR PLATE BOOK with decorative and large costume prints. Mostly covering the Kingdom of Naples and Rome. The artist - Édouard-Henri-Théophile Pingret (1788 1875) was a French painter and lithographer.

The suite of plates offers a selection of 12 plates taken from the two series (the eleventh and the fourteenth) of the great publication of the royal gallery of costumes, which totals to 245 plates, arranged in 15 sub-sets. This complete scarce work rarely seen complete. lacks the title, sold as a series of outstanding hand coloured lithographs of Northern African interest, specially Algeria. Joseph Germain Mathieu Roubaud, called "Benjamin", (1811 ? 1847), the son of Mathieu Aubert Roubaud and Rosalie Caillol, was a 19th-century French painter, lithographer and caricaturist. In Paris Roubaud was a student of painter Louis Hersent. From 1833 to 1847, he exhibited at the Salon genre paintings, landscapes, portraits, still lifes in the way of the master, and became a painter of an honorable place. After 1840, he was correspondent in Algiers of the magazine L'Illustration and at the end of his life, treated subjects related to Algeria. It is as a cartoonist and caricaturist that he showed the fullness of his talent. Alongside artists like Daumier or Grandville, he collaborated from 1830 to 1835 with La Caricature and Le Charivari, illustrated satirical newspapers directed by Charles Philipon (of whom he drew a portrait charge, as well as with other newspapers such as La Mode. Ange-Louis Janet (16 November 1811 ? 25 November 1872) also known under the pseudonym Janet-Lange, was a French painter, illustrator, lithographer and engraver. Born in Paris, Janet was admitted in 1833 at the École des beaux-arts de Paris in the workshops of Ingres, Horace Vernet and Alexandre-Marie Colin. He made his debut at the Salon in 1836 and continued to participate until 1870. He painted hunting scenes, military costumes and portraits and composed paintings retracing episodes of French history, such as the Crimean War from 1853 to 1856, the Second Italian War of Independence (1859) and the Second French intervention in Mexico from 1861 to 1867. , Size : Folio (510 x 335 mm), Illustrated with 12 superbly hand coloured lithographs, the plates are numbered 13, then 16 to 20 (Algerian costumes) and 4, then 6 to 10 (Abd-el-Kader's troops):I.
