Add to basketFirst edition. xvi, 132; [2], 30pp. Contemporary gilt-ruled half-calf, marbled boards. Extremities rubbed. Scattered spotting. The first edition of the first supplement to Weatherby's General Stud Book. Horse-races were wagered upon from the days of Queen Anne in the early 1700s, but it was not until the formation of the Jockey Club in 1752 that regulation was first brought into the 'Sport of Kings' according to the 'Rules of Racing'. James Weatherby, pioneering Horse racing writer and historian, compiled the lineage and history of all major race horses as part of his role as Accountant of the Jockey Club, and the Stud Book has borne the Weatherby name ever since. His Introduction to the General Stud Book (1791) attempted to collect into a single volume the pedigrees of all horses then racing, and that had raced in the past. This was incomplete, and revised in 1793. The 1820 second edition was a definitive, and that from which the 1834 first American edition was taken. ESTC records copies at only two locations in the British Isles (BL and Wellcome), and a further four in North America (Huntington, Kansas, NYPL, and Virginia). ESTC T136108. Size: 8vo.
