Looking particularly at the Geometric style of pottery, this is a study of Greece during the ninth and eighth centuries B.C. This period sees the dawn of Hellenic civilisation, the evolution of the Greek city state, the composition of Homeric poems, the invention of the Greek alphabet, the rebirth of figured art, the rise of the great Panhellenic sanctuaries - Olympia, Delphe, Delos - and the departure of the first Greek colonists for South Italy and Sicily. Part I describes the emergence of the Greeks from the isolation of a dark age and the recovery of contact with the older civilisations of the Near East; Part II, the great renaissance of the eighth century, emphasising different regional characters and comparing Greek literature with the archaeological record; Part III considers daily life in towns and villages, the beginnings of temple architecture, the growth of sanctuaries and the effects of the recovery of literacy and the impact of epic poetry on life and worship.
