"It is, however, only too obvious that the Germany of 1941 must have been latent in 1914; and the present study by Dr. Pfeiler is a most interesting essay on the point. Having to do with the fiction which grew out of the last war, it is none the less concerned primarily with the way in which that war predisposed the German psychologically for the Third Reich." --from the foreword. 091306A.

This study systematically explores the profound antithesis and polarities which have characterised German politics and culture since the mid-eighteenth century. The analysis is wide-ranging: while focusing above all on German literature, it also includes German Classical and Romantic music, and the controversial question of the German national character.

Previous Owner's Name Penned in Front, Otherwise Very Good in Worn Dustjacket. 209 pages. hardcover. keywords: Europe Germany Literary Criticism. DESCRIPTION - This book consists of eight essays, some of them previously published in The Cambridge Journal. Their common theme is perhaps best summed up by two lines from one of Rilke's Duino Elegies: Each torpid turn of the world has such disinherited children, to whom no longer what's been, and not yet what's coming, belongs. The central essay of the book is about Rilke and Nietzsche. It shows that Rilke's mature poetry and Nietzsche's philosophy issue from the same situation of the mind: a mind radically determined to find 'ultimate reality' and ultimate spiritual validity wholly within a world which the Christian tradition of Europe believed to depend for its justification on transcendental values. Professor Heller attempts to prove that both Nietzsche and Rilke knew and felt more profoundly than others that such a complete re-orientation of the mind demands a re-definition and re-shaping of all traditional manners of thinking and feeling, based as these are on theological and philosophical assumptions which have been rendered invalid by ' the end of religion In comparing a poet to a philosopher, Professor Heller discusses at the same time one of the most important problems of literary appreciation and criticism: the relationship between thought and poetry. He comes to the conclusion that a neat separation between the two, difficult at all times, is impossible in an age in which more and more poets are engaged in a search not merely for poetry but for such modes of feeling and thought as make poetry possible. All the other essays of the book are intimately connected with this central theme. Goethe's opposition to the of Newtonian scientific thought is discussed in 'Goethe and the Idea of Scientific Truth'; his inability to treat a theme borrowed from the classical or Christian traditions in consistent terms, is argued in 'The Avoidance of Tragedy.' In the essays 'Burckhardt and Nietzsche' and 'Nietzsche and Goethe', Nietzsche is shown to bring to a radically consistent conclusion elements of thought and feeling which are already present, but checked halfway, in apparently conservative minds. The essay 'Oswald Spengler and the Predicament of the Historical Imagination' links these problems of thought and literature to those of historiography; and the concluding two essays on 'The World of Franz Kafka' and 'Karl Kraus: The Last Days of Mankind' show minds either completely immersed in, or violently rebelling against, the spiritually disinherited world. Selective though this book is in its choice of individual minds and questions, it yet claims to deal with one of the most distinctive strands in modern literature and thought, significant not only within the confines of German letters. inventory #42580 Previous Owner's Name Penned in Front, Otherwise Very Good in Worn Dustjacket.
