Paperback. Condition: New. This title offers a fascinating look at the one of the ancient world's most prized substances. Amber has fascinated mankind since the Palaeolithic era. Through exquisite visual examples and vivid classical texts, this book examines the myths and legends woven around amber - its employment in magic and medicine, its transport and carving, and its incorporation into jewellery, amulets, and other objects of prestige. Amber is a tree resin that has metamorphosed over millions of years into a hard, transparent, plastic-like polymer. In the ancient world it was treasured in its raw state, made into ornaments, sewn onto clothing, used to perfume oils and creams, ground into medicines, and burned as incense. It was dedicated to the gods and buried with the wealthy and powerful. Full of fascinating facts and stories, this book brings to life one of the world's most luminous substances.

An excellent copy of this thirteenth century view of the end of the world and the judgement of souls that follows as described in the biblical Book of Revelations written by St. John the Divine. Add to basketHardcover. Fine condition. First edition in this form. Issued in a limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies, of which this example is lettered 'J' as part of 20 additional lettered copies 'not for sale'. Two-volume set housed in the publisher's presentation clamshell box. Quarto format. The commentary volume is bound in maroon buckram, with gilt titles to the spine and a gilt decorative motif on the upper board; it comprises 135 pages, plus 22 pages of black-and-white plates, and remains in fine condition. The facsimile volume contains 92 pages, including 82 pages of full-colour facsimile plates and a colophon leaf. It is quarter bound in Wassa goatskin with vegetable parchment decorative boards, with all edges gilt, and is likewise in fine condition. Both volumes bear a small bookplate on the front pastedown. The clamshell case is covered in maroon buckram with gilt and black decorative titling to the spine and is near fine overall. A superb example of this Folio Society facsimile depicting a thirteenth-century vision of the Apocalypse and the judgement of souls, as described in the biblical Book of Revelation attributed to St John the Divine. Though traditionally ascribed to him, the work is thought to have been written in the latter half of the eleventh century, with little else known of the author beyond his name. A fine and highly attractive Folio Society production.

Saint John the Divine's vision of the events leading to the Second Coming of Christ at the end of time, commonly known as the Apocalypse, inspired the creation of many illuminated manuscripts in England in the 1200s. Western Europeans particularly popularized the text at this time because of recent cataclysmic events, including the Tartars' invasion of Russia in the 1230s and the fall of Jerusalem to the Moslems in 1244. These events raised fears that the end of time was at hand.Every page of the Dyson Perrins Apocalypse, named after a previous owner of the manuscript, contains a brief passage from the Apocalypse written in black ink, a portion of a popular commentary written by a monk named Berengaudus in red ink, and a half-page miniature. The miniatures, executed in a sophisticated tinted drawing technique, faithfully follow Saint John's exceptionally vivid descriptions of his visions and do not particularly reflect Berengaudus's commentary. The illuminator incorporated Saint John experiencing his vision into the majority of scenes, lending authority and a sense of immediacy to the images. As a result, the reader vicariously witnesses the horrific and awesome events unfolding in the Apocalypse along with the saint. 3800 gr. Summary: The visionary nature of the Apocalypse¿the biblical book of Revelation¿along with its detailed descriptions of the end of the world have long made it ideal for illustration. Illuminated texts of the Apocalypse were particularly popular in thirteenth-century England, and the copy in the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, with its lively narrative miniatures, stands as a testament to the artistic heights achieved during that period. In this richly illustrated book, all eighty-two of the manuscript¿s images are reproduced in color for the first time. They are accompanied by a full commentary. A general introduction to the history of thirteenth-century English illustrated Apocalypse manuscripts is followed by a succinct study of the artistic context of the Getty¿s manuscript, as well as a consideration of its style and date. Couverture rigide. Condition: Neuf. Dust Jacket Condition: Neuf. Edition originale. Getty Museum Los Angeles. London 2012. 22,8 x 30,5 cm, 96 illuminierte Seiten, 42 Initialen, Halbleder, in archivbeständigem Schuber.
