Das 1971 im Verlag Gebrüder König, Köln/New York, erschienene Buch ist Manifest und Programm für das umfangreiche und vielfältige künstlerische Schaffen von Gilbert & George. Hier formulieren sie in den drei Kapiteln "With Us in the Nature", "A Glimpse into the Abstract World" und "The Reality in Our Living" ihre Auffassung von Kunst und Leben als "Living Sculptures". Aufgrund der eminenten Bedeutung des Buches haben Gilbert & George selbst nach mehr als 40 Jahren eine Neuauflage initiiert und deren perfekte Herstellung überwacht. Das wohlproportionierte, überaus angenehm in der Hand liegende Buch, in halbfetter Garamond handgesetzt und immer die ganze Seite ausfüllend, gedruckt auf chamoisfarbiges Papier, trägt im hinteren Deckel den Buchbinderstempel "The linens used to bind "Side by Side" were individually hand-marbled by Gilbert & George". "Die marmorierte Struktur des Leineneinband variiert von Exemplar zu Exemplar. Im Inneren des Buches befindet sich auf jeder rechten Seite eine Schwarzweißabbildung mit einem Untertitel, der auf der rechten (sic!) Seite ein Textblock entspricht. Dieser nimmt das im Titel angesprochene Motiv auf und vertieft es. Das erste der drei Kapitel zeigt die beiden Künstler Seite an Seite in der Natur umherwandernd. Manche Abbildungen zeigen ausschließlich Naturansichten. Im zweiten Kapitel werden neben den Texten ungegenständliche Strichzeichnungen gestellt. Diesem "flüchtigen Blick in die abstrakte Welt" folgt als Kapitel 3 die "Realität unseres Lebens". First and limited edition, number 245 of 600 copies, signed by the artists, and bound in marbled cloth, the marbling of each copy being unique. Side by Side was published just five years after the artists first met. This "contemporary sculpture novel" is divided into the chapters "With Us in the Nature", "A Glimpse Into the Abstract World", and "The Reality in Our Living", with alternating prose and illustrations. The text of the final chapter consists of the lyrics to Flanagan and Allen's Underneath the Arches (1932), printed 19 times, on each occasion facing a new illustration. That musical piece also featured in other early works by Gilbert & George, including their art installation The Living Sculpture (1969), in which the duo sang along to a recording while covered in colourful metallic powder in imitation of statues.
