Illustrated by Edward A. Wilson (illustrator). Limited Edition. A patriotic romance of Elizabethan seafaring, Westward Ho! follows Devon adventurer Amys Leigh and the fight against the Spanish influence of the New World. Originally published in 1855, it is a seminal example of Victorian historical fiction. While influential in its time, Kingsley's novel is often criticized by modern readers for its promotion of toxic masculinity, imperialist ideology, and intense anti-Catholic sentiments. However, it remains a cornerstone of nineteenth-century nationalist literature, drawing from figures like Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh. This edition is limited to just 1500 numbered copies, signed by Edward A. Wilson, of which this is 659. [LEC 182]. Both volumes fine in near fine slipcase, with some wear and paper chipping to opening edges. Half cream canvas stamped in red, black, and gilt over blue-green paper boards.

Add to basketFirst edition, presentation copy, inscribed "From The Author" in a secretarial hand on the half-title of vol. I. Kingsley's greatest popular success, Westward Ho! was originally planned as a patriotic tale about the defeat of the Spanish Armada at a time when Napoleon III's anti-English posturing was alarming many of Kingsley's countrymen. By the time of publication the Crimean War had switched public angst towards Russia, but it remained just as timely and the novel's nostalgic and rose-tinted look at the Elizabethan golden age struck a chord with its Victorian readership. 3 vols, octavo. Original blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt, yellow endpapers. Housed in a custom blue quarter morocco box. With old bookseller's description from James F. Drake of New York (wrongly describing the inscription as in Kingsley's hand) loosely inserted. Repair to headcaps of vol. I, minor colour touch-up to cloth, small chip to the rear cloth of vol. II with slight loss of colour to spine to the same, light bumps to vol. III at extremities, light ink mark to title of vol. III, else contents clean. A very good copy.
