Volume I : very good condition: slight wear and minor soiling; ribbon ties are missing; all sheets are present; first two sheets are the title page and the table of contents; remaining sheets are 170 plates, most are two per sheet, line-drawing illustrations; printed on one side only; sheets are mildly toned a few with slight edge wear; not brittle. Volume II: good plus condition: portfolio is the same material; large pale stain to the spine; 1" tear to the middle of the spine's front joint; minor wear otherwise; clean; all plates present 171-337; plates also toned but not brittle; tiny wormhole through the margin of more than half the plates. DUST JACKET: No jackets, as issued BOOK CONDITION: Sleeves show some overall soiling and light edge wear but lettering still clear and covers in overall good, stable condition. The ribbon ties are broken on one volume and missing on the other. One plate has a dark smudge on the edge and five plates are missing. Plates are age toned but still attractive. DESCRIPTION: The title pages indicate this is five volumes presented as two, a complete reprint without text. Volume one has plates 1 to 170 and volume 2 has plates 171 to 337. Very good/near fine. Portfolios lightly soiled and faintly edgeworn only; title pages (only) a bit soiled and age toned. Handsome complete set of this large collection of detailed architectural renderings by French-English artist and architectural historian Augustus (1762-1832) and his architect son Augustus Welby (1812-52), who together helped spur the Gothic Revival of the early 18th century. This pair's two-volume "Specimens of Gothic Architecture" (1821-23) and three-volume "Examples of Gothic Architecture" (1831) are both contained in this work, here a "Complete Reprint without text." The upper left corner of every card bears the inkstamped name of "A.S. Graven, Inc.," the noted Chicago architectural firm responsible for many of that area's famed movie palaces and other structures.
