Cependant Dom Cardine luimême a souvent regretté de n'avoir pas transcrit, dans cette oeuvre de jeunesse, les neumes d'un manuscrit déterminé, mais d'avoir seulement fait un choix parmi les leçons des meilleurs manuscrits sangalliens. En 1974, lorsque les moines de Solesmes publièrent le nouveau Graduale Romanum, beaucoup souhaitèrent que ce livre soit utilisé pour un nouveau Graduel neumé, où figureraient les leçons de manuscrits bien déterminés. On manifesta ce désir aux membres de l'Associazione Internazionale Studi di Canto Gregoriano, fondée en 1975. Dom Jean Claire, maître de choeur de Solesmes, déclara souhaiter lui aussi cette édition.
