Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: near fine. Say, Allen (illustrator). First Edition. Quarto size, 32 pp., signed and with an original cartoon drawing by Allen Say. A touching story of immigration that affected three generations of one family, written and illustrated with beautiful watercolour paintings by Allen Say, and winner of the 1994 Caldecott Medal. Mr. Say was born in Yokohama, Japan, and himself emmigrated to San Francisco at the age of sixteen; he is a well-known author and illustrator, having also written "Tree of Cranes", selected as an ALA Notable Children's Book. This story tells of a grandfather and grandson, both of whom love two lands; Japan and America. The story opens with the author's grandfather immigrating from Japan, exploring America, and eventually returning to his homeland. Whenever he is in one country, he longs for the other. This longing carries over through his daughter to his grandson, the narrator, who also travels to America and, once there, misses Japan. This copy with a small original ink drawing on the front free endpaper by Say of a gentleman with a mustache and fedora (presumably a self-portrait), with his signature below also in black ink. ___DESCRIPTION: Original quarter brown cloth and light-brown paper covered boards, blind stamped origami design of a sailboat to upper board, lettering in gilt to backstrip, light-brown endpapers, vignette of an origami sailboat on the title page; quarto size (11.75" by 9.75"), [1-3] 4-32 pp., first edition, first printing with the number line ending with "1". In pictorial dust jacket with the original price of $16.95, illustration from the book on the front panel, the origami sailboat on the back panel, summary of book on the front flap, short author bio on the back flap with ads for other books written and illustrated by him. ___CONDITION: Fine overall; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings; a bit of light sunning to the top edges of both boards, else fine.
