Blue cloth blocked in black and with gilt on the front cover and the spine, with black decorative details on the front and rear covers, and with a vignette in gilt on the front cover of what appears to be a woman playing a Celtic harp. Some wear to the extremities but without the corners rubbed through, top and bottom of spine tender, spine darkened, blue covers clean and bright, cover gilt bright, spine gilt somewhat dulled, previous owner's signature at the top of the title page (A.M. Page), all folding maps appeared to be unopened, else very good to near fine with th no internal markings. No dust jacket, probably as issued. All in all in extraordinarily fine condition given its age and fragility. This book is just a mine of information to delight any traveler to Wales. Please note: this appears to be the first edition, as there are no other dates listed, and it is not one of the later reprints, nor one of the Gossiping Guides limited to North Wales. John Askew Roberts (1826-1884) was an antiquary, journalist, and author. He was was the founder of a newspaper called "The Oswestry Advertizer". Generally known as Askew Roberts, he was born in 1826 in Oswestry. He wrote several books. Besides "The Oswestry Advertizer", he published a quarterly journal called "Bye-gones relating to Wales and to the Border Counties". [information from Wikitree].
