Add to basketHardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Preface. 1. Introductory. 2.The Mul Mantra. 3. The Attributes Anew. 4. The How and Why of Devotion. Japu JI Text (Trilingual). Bibliography. The ultimate reality, God or Brahman, may well be said to outstrip the reach of thought; but if we do not try, as thoughtfully as we possibly can, to get at what Guru Nanak really says in this seminal work Japuji a daily prayer book how will we be able to benefit from his teaching, as he surely wanted fervently? In the entire history of mankind very few men have been so acutely sensitive to our multifarious suffering, and so keen to show us the way to transcend it for good, as Guru Nanak was. This makes the authors approach this holy work in a new perspective. This volume tries to interpret Mul Mantra in such a way that the celestial attributes listed in it come to be interrelated, as they must be taken to be. It also attempts wherever possible to explain the order of Guru's prolific utterances, be they invocatory or just eulogistic. However ebullient the Guru's utterances may seem to be, they are always significant vehicles of some profound meaning; and also warranted by the running context.Guru Nanak's Japuji is a great work, yet this volume is expected to do some good to every thoughtful reader. At the end, the entire text of Japuji in Punjabi, Devnagari with Roman transliteration is given, making the text accessible to the masses who live outside India and need this prayer to be read in English. He was born in Talwandi, near Lahore, during a time of political and religious discord and disharmony. Right from an early age, he displayed a deep knowledge of divine subjects and spirituality. He challenged rituals and shows of piety and attacked the Citadel of the caste system. He taught that the core tenets of living a good life were helping those less fortunate, making an honest living and meditating on the name of the Lord so as to overcome human weaknesses. He travelled extensively Mecca to the Himalayas to central India - with his faithful disciple Mardana, teaching about love, one God and truth and oneness with the Lord. He propagated the philosophy of salvation through meditation and rejected all forms of idolatry. His travels have been chronicled in the Janamsakhis, written decades after his death. His teachings have been immortalised in the form of 974 verses that form part of the holy text of Sikhism, the Guru Granth Sahib. Translated and edited by Navkirat Sodhi, the aphorisms in 'the light in all is one' contain some of Guru Nanak greatest teachings. These wise lessons about living a fulfilling life are timeless and universal.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Preface. 1. Bani (Hymns) of Guru Nanak and Upanisads. 2. Cosmogony or origin of creation. 3. God, man and the world. 4. God's love and grace in life. 5. Aim of man's life and path of liberation. 6. Conclusion. Bibliography. Index. This volume illustrates, compares and discusses as to how Guru Nanak with his transcendental exposition, sharp skill, argumentative capability and common poetic language further enriched, explained, simplified, modernized and expressed various theological and philosophical concepts elucidated in Upanishads for the understanding and adaptation of a common man. Upanishads are "breath of eternal" and hymns of Guru Nanak are "a divine song of life". Guru Nanak's exuberance of love and search for God and godly people was not confined to any religion or religious institution. He revolted against the ritualistic mind of a brahmana. He was essentially a man of God whose love and quest for search for the Ultimate Truth knew no limits. In the pursuit of this search he enjoyed a reach to the state of void meaning a state where there is no distinction between the object and the subject the knower and the known. He was a protagonist of Bhakti tradition and stressed more on bhakti or devotion to God. He taught the Sahaja-Patha or Surata Shabada Yoga that easily takes one straight to the Lord by spontaneous concentration of mind. Both hymns of Guru Nanak and Upanishads explain that the real aim of human life is to attain liberation from the repeated coming and going in incarnations, which can be attained by adequate karma, knowledge and disciplined meditation.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. ABOUT THE BOOK This is a well-researched and scholarly book on the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev ji. It traces the philosophical underpinnings of the way of life that Guru Nanak taught us meditating, earning through hard work, and sharing with others. Guru Nanak's unique mantra maximises human welfare by striking an optimal combination of a householder's life with attainment of highest levels of spiritual standards. Guru Nanak's preaching in different geographical regions and interaction with diverse spiritualists at various pilgrimages emphasised on raising consciousness by cultivating the mind. The book discusses the increasing relevance during the contemporary period of the economic and social model of Guru Nanak, minted at Kartarpur, where he finally settled after long travels, about 500 years ago. Guru Nanak emphasised on dignity of labour; equality of human race without making distinction between religion, castes, and gender; and democratic values of decision making through consultation; for a vibrant and happy society. The author explains various concepts in a very lucid manner, quoting frequently from Gurbani and contextualising events by referencing historical texts. It is indeed an intellectual treat for a scholar and a seeker. I would strongly recommend the book to all young and old, and Sikhs and non-Sikhs to appreciate the social richness and economic wellbeing of living together in a harmonious way. ABOUT THE AUTHOR With experience of 33 years in educational arena, Prof. Harpreet Kaur is dedicated to girl education especially of minority communities disseminating our composite culture. At present, she is Principal of Mata Sundri College for Women, University of Delhi. She is passionate for academic pursuits and has authored, co-authored, edited and translated 38 Books, 19 Book Chapters, 41 Research Papers in National and 16 International Journals, 34 Book Reviews, 18 Forewords/Editorials, 6 Booklets etc. and delivered 40 Papers at National.
