Zweisprachig: engl.-dt. -- Aus dem VORWORT: Händels englische Kirchenmusik umfasst mehr als 30 Werke, die im Zeitraum von 1712 bis 1749 entstanden sind. Die ältesten, die mit ziemlicher Sicherheit zeitlich eingeordnet werden können, sind das Utrecht Te Deum (HWV 278) und das Utrecht Jubilate (HWV 279), beide aus dem Jahr 1713. Es folgte eine langjährige Verbindung (mit einigen Unterbrechungen) zur Chapel Royal, die aus Priestern und Laien bestehend, seit der Zeit der Angelsachsen im Dienste des Königs stand, um die liturgische Feier zu gestalten. Nahezu alle großen Namen der englischen Musik sind auf die eine oder andere Art mit der Chapel Royal verbunden. Während der Monarch in London residierte, befand sich, zumindest zu Händels Zeit, die Chapel Royal im St. James Palace. -- Das Anthem O sing unto the Lord a new song (HWV 249a) von etwa 1714 geht zusammen mit dem Te Deum in D zurück auf Händels erste Begegnung mit der Chapel Royal. Beide Stücke wurden höchstwahrscheinlich zur gleichen Gelegenheit aufgeführt, entweder am 26. September oder aber am 17. Oktober 1714. Händels Autograph benennt zwei Sänger, "Mr. Eilfort" (Richard Eiford, Alto) und "Mr. Baker" (Thomas Baker, Basso). Eiford starb am 29. Oktober 1714. Das Tonartenmodell ist für unsere modernen Hörgewohnheiten etwas unbefriedigend, spätestens an der Stelle, die in G-Dur beginnt und in D-Dur endiet, diese zweite Tonart ist stark durch die Trompeteeprägt, die erst im letzten Satz auftauchen. Ehe Tonarten standen schon fest, bevor Händel dezweiten Satz aufgrund von Tonhöhenprobleme-der Soloflöte und der Orgel in St. James herav.-strich; dabei strich er wahrscheinlich versehentlich auch Nr. 3. Ansonsten gibt es keinen anderen Grund, warum diese Sätze weggelassen werden sollten und deshalb wurden sie in der vorliegenden Edition in ihrer ursprünglichen Form wiederhergestellt. -- Als Textgrundlage für das Chapel-Roy: Anthem O sing unto the Lord dienten Hände! d Verse 1-3, 8, 9 und 11 aus Psalm 96, so wie es im Book of Common Prayer geschrieben stehen Im einleitenden Andante "O sing unto the Lord " stellt die Alto-Solostimme, begleitet von der Solooboe und dem Basso Continuo, den gesamten Text vor, der anschließend vom Chor wiederholt wird. Musikalisch passiert hier nichts Außergewöhnliches, aber schon die Leichtigkeit und die Sicherheit, mit der Händel dieses Material vorstellt, schafft einen erfüllten Moment. Dem etwas unglücklichen Air "Sing unto the lord"/"Singet unserm Herrn" (Nr. 2), mit seinen sorgfältig notierten Dynamikzeichen, scheint die Freude zu fehlen, die der Text ausstrahlt, es ist aber trotzdem wirkungsvoll.
