Mai 2007 in Freiburg im Breisgau) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller, der auch unter dem Pseudonym Nikolaus Steigert veröffentlichte. Sell wuchs in Berlin auf und trat 1938 in die deutsche Wehrmacht ein, der er bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs zuletzt im Rang eines Hauptmanns angehörte. In der Erzählung Der lange Nachruf auf den gefallenen Freund schildert er, wie er und sein Adjutant in der Endphase des Krieges versuchten, durch Unterlaufen von Befehlen und Kriegführung nach eigener Meinung die ihnen anvertrauten Soldaten vor dem Verheiztwerden zu bewahren. Nach dem Krieg studierte er an der Universität Frankfurt am Main bei Adorno, Max Horkheimer und Gadamer Philosophie und daneben Germanistik und Ethnologie. Im Fach Ethnologie wurde er auch promoviert. Nach seiner Promotion war er zwei Jahre lang Mitarbeiter der Evangelischen Akademie in Tutzing und rief dort den Politischen Club Zugang zur Politik ins Leben. 1960 gründete Sell in Baden-Baden die Deutsche Miguel de Unamuno-Gesellschaft.[1] 19601968 war er Auslandskorrespondent in Spanien, bis seine Arbeitserlaubnis von der Franco-Regierung wegen seiner zu kritischen Berichterstattung entzogen wurde. Diese Jahre wurden verarbeitet in dem Buch An Spaniens Fell zerren Dämonen. Es folgten Reisen nach Afrika und Lateinamerika. Contemporary calf, spine richly gilt with raised bands, label with gilt lettering, marbled edges, joints a bit rubbed. The Peace of Turin, concluded in 1696, lurred the Duke of Savoy away from the Grand Alliance, which in its turn prompted the Austrians and Spanish to conclude a peace in Italy to protect their now dangerously exposed position there. William III was now also determined to bring an end to the war, and Louis XIV swallowed the bitter pill of recognizing William III as King of England. The necessary treaties then were signed in Ryswick. The Treaty of Ryswick, or Ryswyck, was signed on 20 September 1697 and named after Ryswick (now Rijswijk) in the Dutch Republic. The treaty settled the War of the League of Augsburg (Nine Years' War), which pitted France against the Grand Alliance of England, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire and the United Provinces. Under the terms of the treaty, France renounced some recent territorial gains, but did gain recognition for its control over Acadia and Saint-Domingue (to-be Haiti).Negotiations started in May. The French representatives had their headquarters at The Hague, and the allies were based in Delft: the conference taking place in between the two towns in the Huis ter Nieuwburg, Ryswick.For the first few weeks, no result was reached so in June the two protagonists in the struggle, William III of Orange and Louis XIV of France, each appointed one representative to meet together privately. Soon, Spain gave way, and on 20 September a treaty of peace was signed between France and the three powers, England, Spain and the United Provinces. Schwerpunkte seiner Reisebeschreibung sind Italien, Deutschland, Skandinavien, das Osmanische Reich und das nördliche Schwarzmeergebiet." (Griep-Luber). Mit Karten und Plänen sowie schönen Tafeln, teils Frühwerke von William Hogarth, u.a. von griechischen und türkischen Volksfesten und -bräuchen, sowie erlesenen orientalischen Kunstschätzen. (1340-1397) erzählt. - Komplizierte Tafelkollation, nach Schiötz (mit der besten verfügbaren Kollation) häufig "verket er ukomplette plansjer". "The plates are of particular insterest and include many signed by Hogarth, which form part of his early work." (Blackmer). Lacking also 4 leaves subscribers' list. Added is the quite rare supplement (1732) in English and French with an account of La Motraye's travels in Eastern and Northern Europe with 7 (of 9) engr. plates amd maps (lacking an engraved and a half-title and 2 plates). Vol. 1 and 2 of important provenience: The family De Coucy became quite popular through "A Distant Mirror" by Barbara Tuchman. Tuchman tells the story of the 14th century along the biography of Enguerrand de Coucy VII. - A few tears to folding plates. 2 corners of main work restored, else a clean and broad-margined copy in contemp. calf, worn, rebacked. The supplementary vol. somewhat narrow-margined, slightly browned, inobtrusive water-staining to few quires, inscription cut out from title. This volume bound in contemp. calf, slighty rubbed.
