ABOUT VOLUME 1: For more than a quarter of a century, Hubert L. Dreyfus has been the leading voice in American philosophy for the continuing relevance of phenomenology, particularly as developed by Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Dreyfus has influenced a generation of students and a wide range of colleagues, and these volumes are an excellent representation of the extent and depth of that influence. In keeping with Dreyfus's openness to others' ideas, many of the essays in this volume take the form of arguments with various of his positions. The essays focus on the dialogue with the continental philosophical tradition, in particular the work of Heidegger, that has played a foundational role in Dreyfus's thinking. The sections are Philosophy and Authenticity; Modernity, Self, and the World; and Heideggerian Encounters. The book concludes with Dreyfus's responses to the essays.Contributors: William D. Blattner, Taylor Carman, David R. Cerbone, Dagfinn Føllesdal, Charles Guignon, Michel Haar, Beatrice Han, Alastair Hannay, John Haugeland, Randall Havas, Jeff Malpas, Mark Okrent, Richard Rorty, Julian Young, Michael E. Zimmerman.(Publisher) ABOUT VOLUME 2: Hubert L. Dreyfus's engagement with other thinkers has always been driven by his desire to understand certain basic questions about ourselves and our world. The philosophers on whom his teaching and research have focused are those whose work seems to him to make a difference to the world. The essays in this volume reflect this desire to "make a difference"-not just in the world of academic philosophy, but in the broader world. Dreyfus has helped to create a culture of reflection-of questioning the deep premises that inform and shape work in artificial intelligence and cognitive science. He has also been the primary introducer and interpreter of Martin Heidegger's work to the world of information technology. The essays in this volume represent the fruitful application of deep philosophical analysis to the concerns of our modern technological world. The sections are Coping and Intentionality; Computers and Cognitive Science; and "Applied Heidegger." In addition to cognitive science and artificial intelligence, topics include everyday skills, religion, business practices, and medical care. The book concludes with Dreyfus's responses to the essays. Contributors Daniel Andler, Patricia Benner, Albert Borgmann, Harry Collins, George Downing, Fernando Flores, Sean Kelly, Joseph Rouse, Theodore R. Schatzki, John Searle, Robert C. Solomon, Charles Spinosa, David Stern, Charles Taylor, Terry Winograd, Mark Wrathall(Publisher).

Paperback. Condition: New. This Element argues that Heidegger's concept of science has two core features. Heidegger critiques a security-oriented concept of science, which he associates with the dominance of physics in modern science and metaphysics and with a progressive resistance among philosophers and scientists to ontological questioning. Meanwhile, Heidegger advances an access-oriented concept of science, on which science is essentially founded on ontological disclosures but also constantly open to the possibility of new revolutionary disclosures. This Element discusses how these commitments develop in Heidegger's early and later thinking, and argues that they inform his views on the history of Western metaphysics and on the possibilities for human flourishing that modernity, and modern science specifically, affords. The Element also discusses Heidegger's dialogue with Werner Heisenberg about quantum physics; and throughout, it highlights points of contact and divergence between Heidegger and other philosophers of science such as Karl Popper, Thomas Kuhn, Paul Feyerabend, and Helen Longino.

McLean Preface Part I: Heidegger's Understanding of Science and Technology Chapter One: Heidegger's Interest in Science and Technology Chapter Two: The Picture of the Modern World Chapter Three: Science as the Theory of the Real Chapter Four: How are Science and Mathematics Related to Metaphysics? Chapter Five: "God is Dead" and Technology Chapter Six: What is Technology? Chapter Seven: Dwelling, Thinking and Technology Chapter Eight: Reflection on Heidegger and Technology Part II: Dealing with Technology, Inspired by Heidegger Chapter Nine: Western Technology and the Rediscovery of Indigenous Wisdom Chapter Ten: A New Definition of Philosophy as Love of Being Chapter Eleven: The Imperative of a Nonviolent Approach to Being. The purpose of writing this book is twofold: one, to engage in a critical exposition of Heidegger's views on science and especially his thoughts on technology in the current context of the threat to humans and the environment posed by technology; two, to go beyond Heidegger by suggesting certain steps to counter technology. Heidegger's way of meditative thinking could help us retain our sanity. His approach to technology is metaphysical. The author argues that the metaphysical approach is good but insufficient. We need a moral approach to technology as well. We may not be able to handle technology without a nonviolent attitude towards being. Violence combined with technology will most likely obliterate all life, including ours, from the planet. So the book will help the readers to understand what constitutes a nonviolent approach to being.
