Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. BL1 - A first edition (complete numberline) hardcover book SIGNED by Ann Lewis and inscribed to previous owner on the title page in very good condition in very good dust jacket. Dust jacket has some wrinkling, chipping and crease on the edges and corners, light discoloration and shelf wear. Book has some bumped corners, some light stains on the page edges, staple hole on the front free endpaper, light discoloration and shelf wear. 8.25"x7.25", 157 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Long haunted by the legacy of her Southern heritage, writer and artist Ann Lewis returns to its tree-lined avenues and meandering side streets in this exquisite reminiscence. Traveling through the countryside of Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Louisiana, she draws links between the plants she loved as a child and the individuals she encounters as an adult. As she collects herbarium-style "specimens" of the varied plants of the area and weaves them into beautiful, miniature collages, a rich portrait of the South comes to life. Each lovely image is accompanied by evocative, humorous, and often touching prose. Through it Ann Lewis has created a lyrical tribute to the Southern landscape that charms and captivates. Bringing the perspectives of both insider and outsider to her work, Ann Lewis dedicates each piece in her book to a different native plant, letting each reveal its time-steeped stories, history, and lore. Gathered together, they have the intricate feel of a botanical collection. The plants' stories offer the secrets of their lives and of the characters who have lived amongst them. Gardeners, artists, and dreamers - whether from the South or drawn by its lushness - will discover a treasure in this provocative and beautiful homage. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Dated 1878, this is an important French Herbarium titled on the spine "Pensionnat Soeurs De Nevers A Lectoure", which roughly translates as "Boarding School of the Sisters of Nevers in Lectoure" Containing around eighty five pages of dried pressed plants, of those around 73 are signed "D.D." this is the French Botanist and Malacologist Abbé Dominique Dupuy of Lectoure in France. The Herbarium is bound in a half leather binding, just under 41cm tall. The binding has some general rubbing wear with scuffs to the paper covering and rubbing to the leather, else in solid condition, internally all the pages are pictured so content and condition can be seen. Abbé Dominique Dupuy (1812-1885) botanist, malacologist and more broadly a biologist, born in Lectoure (department of Gers). Abbé Dupuy is today an important figure, particularly for the science of disease, as evidenced by the obituary published in 1885 in the Journal de Conchyliologie. The only known portrait to date with his biography would be in Bulletins de la Société malacologique de France. Dominique Dupuy was also a member of the Botanical Society of France, an honorary member of the Natural History Society of Toulouse in 1872 and a member of the Departmental Society of Agriculture and Horticulture of the Gers within which he directed publications. Very well known under the status of botanist, it was nevertheless the science of malacology that earned him the most fame because it was within this discipline that he showed the most ambition. He was one of the first malacologists who extended the desire for a colossal undertaking of inventory within the science of malacology suggested by Abbé Poiret, Lamarck and Draparnaud. The Contributions to the French Malacological Fauna detail all the work of the scientist, thus affirming his importance and his role within this discipline. He is a specialist in conchology and in particular in the examination of the shells and external parts of the animal. Its collection of land and fluvial molluscs from the region was built up around 1850 and donated to the museum of Toulouse on 16 July 1879. Other specimens were donated to the Natural History Museum of Metz in 1885, as well as many other museums around the world such as Cincinnati, Avellino, Saint-Cyr, Arcachon, Bagnères-de-Bigorre, Montauban, Dupuy's collection is one of the most important collections of malacology because of the quality of its specimens. Much of his collection is now housed in The Natural History Museum of Toulouse. Signed by Author(s).
