This issue includes articles and information on supercomputers, NASA and the French National Space Agency (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales) cooperation. First Lady Hillary Clinton, Climate documentary, Forecast Models, Science Teachers, NASA Research and Education Network, Neuron Nerolab, and a replica of the 1903 Wright Flyer. NASA is conducting a High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC) program as part of a broader federal HPCC effort, including HPCC networks and advanced software for the National Information Infrastructure. The NASA HPCC program is conducted under the guidance of the agency's Office of Aeronautics; Ames Research Center is the lead center, assisted by Langley Research Center and Lewis Research Center. The immediate aim of the NASA HPCC program is achievement of sustained computational speeds of one trillion FLOPS. NASA, was developing applications software and algorithms for scalable parallel computing systems that would enable attainment of the goal by 1997. The technologies being developed would be applied to designing advanced aerospace vehicles; increasing scientists' abilities to model Earth's climate and forecast global environmental trends; advancing astronomy and astrophysics research; and improving the data-gathering capabilities of future spacecraft.

The program, established in 1991, continues its commitment to research and development in high-performance computing and communications and demonstrates how these technologies have developed over four years. Through interviews with industry professionals, academics, and politicians, the author analyzes what has been achieved so far and where the program is headed next. The significance of the HPCC program lies in its ability to transform the sectors of national security, education, healthcare, and more. This analysis is vital in determining the future of the program and its continued funding. The book is accessible to anyone interested in the convergence of government, industry, and academia to push the boundaries of technology. This book concerns itself with the historical and theoretical context of high-performance computing and communications networks, emphasizing the central role of the United States' contribution to the development of the internet and the potential societal benefits of further developing supercomputer technologies and software. The development of supercomputers, software programming and enhanced communication networks is explored in depth, with detailed attention given to the collaboration between the public and private sectors in research and development. The author of this book makes a persuasive case that supercomputing technology will play a key role in the trajectory of industry and education in the United States and elaborates upon the scientific and engineering grand challenges (mapping the human genome, forecasting and preventing global climate change, developing new energy technologies, and many more) that can be most efficiently addressed by dramatically improving computing capability.
