HARDBACK - A very good book bound in the publisher's blue cloth boards that are clean, but with very mild fading to the edges of the front and rear boards ( about 1mm of fading ). Internally the book is free of any previous owner names or inscriptions. Warmly inscribed by the author to the page opposite to the copyrite page. The inscription reads - AND FOR MARYELLA / FOR HER / ? TH / BIRTHDAY / WITH BEST WISHES / FROM / DAVID / ALIAS / JOHN LE CARRE. There is light foxing to the closed page block, also with some foxing to the prelim pages. There is the odd mark to the inner text, but overall a very good book the Hong Kong map end-papers present. The dust wrapper is a very good example with a couple of very small chips to the spine tips, also with light foxing to the front and rear flaps. The publisher's printed price of £4.95net present. Included with the book is a lovely hand written letter by the author on his headed note paper to the same Maryella to whom the book is inscribed. It is evident with the double sided letter that Maryella and her family were friends of David Cornwell. It mentions in the letter that the author was unable to meet up as he has filming commitments in the far east over the Autumn of 1990. A personal letter with nice content. Two copies of the Honourable Schoolboy were printed simultaneously. The UK edition ( THIS COPY ) with the blue boards, map end papers and a £4.95 priced dust wrapper. The second copy was printed with black boards, with plain white end papers, and with a dust wrapper which had no printed price to the lower front flap. This copy was printed and destined for the export market. John le Carré aka David Cornwell (1974-79) 'The Karla Trilogy', all UK first editions, first printings, published by Hodder and Stoughton. All are signed and inscribed by the author on the respective title pages. The set consists of: 1) 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy'; signed and inscribed: "For Leon | from John le Carré | 24 ii '99 | Leeds". In fine condition with just the top edge slightly faded. No previous owner's scribbles of any sorts and clean throughout. The dust jacket is NOT faded on the spine as almost always found, NOT clipped. Housed in a solander case produced by the Chelsea Bindery. 2) 'The Honourable Schoolboy'; signed and inscribed: "John le Carré | for | Harry Bracken". This is the rarer variant with blank endpapers, less common than the version with map endpapers. Near fine with Harry Bracken's name on the ffep. The dust jacket is NOT clipped. 3) 'Smiley's People'; signed and inscribed: "John le Carré | for Trevor | with best wishes | 11 Jan 85". In fine condition with no previous owner's scribbles of any sorts. All books are in great condition with light shelf wear only. The Karla Trilogy is probably the greatest achievement of spy fiction to date. A landmark book introducing and popularising an entire spy jargon to readers which is now frequently used in the genre. Largely inspired by the Cambridge Five scandal the books were an immediate success. Adapted into a British TV-series starring the great ALec Guinness, as well as a 2011 Blockbuster film starring Gary Oldman. Signed AND inscribed first editions of the Karla trilogy do not often appear on the market with the majority of specimen being 'flat signed'. Inscribed copies add the little bit of extra handwriting allowing us to verify the signatures as genuine more easily, and they bear more personality. First and Fine. Signed by Author(s).

First editions of each title in the author's acclaimed Karla Trilogy. Octavo, 3 volumes, bound in full morocco, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, inner dentelles, all edges gilt. Each volume is signed by John le Carre on a bookplate, with two signed "John le Carre aka David Cornwell." Each are in fine condition. Each volume is housed in a custom slipcase. An exceptional set, uncommon signed. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy garnered instant praise for Le Carre as "[t]he premier spy novelist of his time. Perhaps of all time" (Time). "Le Carre is simply the world's greatest fictional spymaster" (Newsweek). Le Carre's inspiration drew from his experience of the revealing of the Cambridge Five traitors in the 1950s and '60s (Anthony, 2009), and the novel's popularity can be seen in relation to those shocking events. In 2011, the novel was adapted into a successful film, starring Gary Oldman and Colin Firth, and it received three nominations at the 84th Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Actor. This successful production is but one of Le Carre's numerous accolades in espionage fiction. He was awarded both the Helmerich Award and the Goethe Medal, and, in 2008, The Times ranked Le Carré 22nd on its list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945.".

The trilogy saw the return of le Carré's hero and master-spy George Smiley, almost ten years after the success of The Looking Glass War in 1965. Smiley is "an anti-Bond figure: dumpy, bespectacled, intellectual, mundane, and nearly invisible. In the Karla Trilogy. le Carré perfects the novelistic form of the realist spy" (Prévost, p. 197). Maxime Prévost, "Mythology and Diplomacy in Works by Ian Fleming and John le Carré", in Isabelle Daunais & Allan Hepburn, eds, Diplomacy and the Modern Novel, 2020. Three works, octavo. Original black and blue boards, spines lettered in gilt, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy decorated on spine and front board in gilt, top edge red, tan endpapers, The Honourable Schoolboy with map endpapers. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy inscribed in black ink, "John Le Carre / a.k.a David Cornwell / 19th November 2019 / Cornwall".A bright sharp set of first editions and printings of the author's great trilogy, the first volume signed and dated by the author as both David Cornwell and John Le Carre.Le Carre's magnum opus, the trilogy constitutes one of the most significant achievements of postwar British fiction. This is the second novel in le Carré's Karla trilogy, featuring the return of le Carré's hero and master-spy George Smiley, "an anti-Bond figure: dumpy, bespectacled, intellectual, mundane, and nearly invisible. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, map endpapers. With dust jacket. Extremities rubbed; jacket lightly edge-worn, unclipped: a very good copy in like jacket.
