Add to basketOriginal artwork by Levy, titled, signed, and dated 1964, depicting Icarus as a shattered figure plummeting earthwards. Original artwork by Levy is rare in commerce. Levy (1942-1968) was a leading figure in the Cleveland Mimeograph Revolution. From 1963 to 1968 his 7 Flowers Press and his publications The Marrahwannah Quarterly and The Buddhist Third Class Junk Mail Oracle printed the works of scores of Cleveland poets, including contributions from Bukowski and Ginsberg. The latter wrote with admiration to Levy in 1966: "Your energy is marvellous" (Trickey). In 1964, the same year as this painting was composed, Levy moved in with his friend Russell Salamon, a fellow poet and Levy's patron. Salamon endeavoured to support Levy, who was preoccupied with the idea of taking his own life, by encouraging him to keep writing, reading, painting, and publishing. The image of Icarus falling to his death is a poignant subject: this piece was composed four years prior to Levy's eventual suicide in November 1968, at the age of 26. Erick Trickey, "The Epic of d.a.levy", The Cleveland Magazine, 19 October 2007. Original illustration (275 x 210 mm). Black pen and brown ink on spiralbound notebook paper. Tape to verso of one corner, adhesive toning to others, one spot of foxing, creases where folded, else very good indeed, free from tears and chips.
