Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First Edition. This is a massive set of early leaves. I have only seen one other of these sets in trade in the last twenty years. The set is meant to accompany the 1990 issue of Konrad Haebler's Alte Typographie und Buchkunst. That book about early printing, not present here, is common -- but only 50…of these sets of the original leaves was issued. It's a marvelous tour of early printing. 37 of 51 are cradle printing, none later than 1550. This copy is a special with an extra leaf (thus 51) fragment (circa 1470-8) by Johann Sensenschmidt of Nuremberg. [Madsen, Typenregister 651] All are exemplary of developments in early typography in Germany, Italy and France. The emphasis is on Germany, though, which shows great variety. Size of the leaves varies, but all are presented in window mounts measuring 480 x 350 mm. (19 x 13 3/4"), and the whole is contained in a box measuring 19 3/4 x 14 1/4"; Text volume: 344 x 244 mm. (13 1/2 × 9 1/2"). The collection is contained in the original sturdy folding box covered with rough-textured linen, mustard-colored paper label on upper cover and spine. All fine. This set is very much in the tradition of the Haebler sets of the 1920s. A feast. This is a list of the first 30 leaves: 1. Speculum humanae salvationis. Augsburg, Zainer, 1473 / 2. Jacobus de Voragine. Legenda sanctorum. Augsburg um 1474 / 3. Plenarium. Augsburg, Anton Sorg um 1480 / 4. Jacobus de Voragine. Leben der Heiligen. Augsburg, Johann Bämler um 1480 / 5. Biblia. 8. deutsche Bibel. Augsburg, Anton Sorg 1480 / 6. Otto von Passau. Goldener Thron. Augsburg, Anton Sorg 1483 / 7. Plenarium. Augsburg, Johann Schönsperger 1483 / 8. Die Auslegung der Messe. Augsburg, Johann Bämler um 1484 / 9. Plenarium. Augsburg, Johann Schobser 1487 / 10. Jacobus de Voragine. Leben der Heiligen. Augsburg, Anton Sorg 1488 / 11. Nicolaus de Tudeschis. Decretalia. Basel, Berthold Ruppel etc. 1477 / 12. Augustinus. Sermones. Basel, Johannes Amerbach 1494 / 13. Kölner Bibel. Niederdeutsche Bibel. Köln, Bartholomäus von Unkel 1478 / 14. Kölnische Chronik. Köln, Johann Koelhoff 1499 (mit einem Textholzschnitt) / 15. Rudimenta novitiorum. Lübeck, Lucas Brandis 1475 / 16. Bernhard von Breydenbach. Peregrinatio in terram sanctam. Liber Chronicarum. Nürnberg, Anton Koberger 1493 (mit einigen Textholzschnitten) / 20. S. Birgitta. Revelationes. Nürnberg, Anton Koberger 1500 / 21. Bernhard von Breydenbach. Reise in das Heilige Land. Speyer, Peter Drach um 1500 / 22. Vincent de Beauvais. Speculum historiale. Straßburg, Johann Mentelin 1473 / 23. Otto von Passau. Goldener Thron. Straßburg, Johann Prüß 1483 / 24. Grüninger-Bibel. 10. Deutsche Bibel. Straßburg, Johann Grüninger 1485 / 25. Publius Virgilius. Opera. Straßburg, Johann Grüninger 1502 / 26. Geiler von Keisersperg. Postill. Straßburg, Johann Grüninger 1515 / 27. Miroer de la redemption. Lyon, Matthias Huß 1483 / 28. Bartholomaeus Anglicus. Le propriétarie en français. Lyon, Matthias Huß 1485 / 29. Valerius Maximus. Factorum et dictorum memorabilium. Lyon, Matthias Huß 1489 / 30. La mer des histoires. Lyon, Claude Davost 1506. Oddly, this set is not listed in Disbound & Disbersed, whch does catalog Haebler's other sets. In any event, a great set.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Block books, also called xylographica, are short books of up to 50 leaves, printed in Europe in the second ha…lf of the fifteenth century as woodcuts with blocks carved to include both text and illustrations. The content of the books was nearly always religious, aimed at a popular audience, and a few titles were often reprinted in several editions using new woodcuts. Although many had believed that block books preceded Gutenberg''s invention of movable type in the first part of the 1450s, it now is accepted that most of the surviving block books were printed in the 1460s or later, and that the earliest surviving one may date to about 1451. They seem to have functioned as a cheap popular alternative to the printed book, which was still very expensive at this stage.
