Mit den Nachträgen von 1757-1763 (8 S.) und 1786-1790 (6 S.), erschien im selben Jahr auch in einer Quartausgabe. - Jede der etwa 30 Indexausgaben in über 400 Jahren kirchlicher Buchzensur ist durch die Ergänzungen, Streichungen und Neuaufnahmen "für sich ein Zeitdokument erster Ordnung" (Wolf 255). Die vorliegende Ausgabe markiert allerdings eine Zäsur in der Geschichte des Index und bildet die Grundlage aller folgenden Listen. Benedikt XIV. (1740-1758) reagierte auf die aufklärerischen Strömungen seiner Zeit mit einer umfassenden Reform des Zensurverfahrens und einer Bereinigung der Liste.
