Paperback. Condition: Very Good. While much has been written on alternative paradigm research, there is little concrete advice on how to effectively use the theoretical notions of naturalistic inquiry in practice. Doing Naturalistic Inquiry is the practical guide designed to help beginning researchers apply the constructivist paradigm. The book covers the research process from design through data collection analysis and presentation and examines important issues generally minimized in positivist research texts ethics, trustworthiness, and authenticity. Cases from a wide variety of disciplines demonstrate the efficacy of the methods described.Doing Naturalistic Inquiry is a highly useful teaching tool for anyone using a constructivist lens on research.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Self-Inquiry - Dawn of the Witness and the End of Suffering provides practical methods for making use of abiding inner silence (the Witness) cultivated in Deep Meditation, resulting in increased inner stability and happiness amidst the ups and downs of life. The practice of Self-Inquiry also aids us in realizing the ultimate truth of existence - the Oneness that we are and the Unity of all that exists. With the dawn of the Witness, we develop an increasing ability to observe our thoughts as objects. As our sense of self shifts from our thoughts to the silent Witness within, the grip of suffering is ended. Yogani is the author of ground-breaking books on highly effective spiritual practices, including: Advanced Yoga Practices - Easy Lessons for Ecstatic Living (two comprehensive user-friendly textbooks), and The Secrets of Wilder, a powerful spiritual novel. The AYP Enlightenment Series makes these profound practices available for the first time in a series of concise instruction books. Self-Inquiry is the seventh book in the series, preceded by Diet, Shatkarmas and Amaroli, Samyama, Asanas, Mudras and Bandhas, Tantra, Spinal Breathing Pranayama, and Deep Meditation.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Students learn to be active and responsible citizens by actually seeking to promote change, rather than just being-supposedly-prepared to be leaders in the future. -Steven Zemelman What really matters to your students? The issues in front of them at school and in life. When students inquire into those issues and know that their arguments will be read with a skeptical eye next week by the city council or published in the local newspaper, they're eager to research and find relevant information in nonfiction texts to bolster their claims. They become committed to write, revise, edit, and correct their grammar. They want to think broadly about what reasoning will be effective with their audience. Want that kind of engagement in your classroom? Whether you teach English, social studies, science, or math, From Inquiry to Action will show you how step-by-step. Its projects for civic-engagement help kids become not only college and career ready but citizen ready. And not ready someday, but right now Research, argument, speaking and listening, close reading, writing for real audiences and purposes, and collaboration? It's all here, growing through projects that give students choice, ownership over their learning, incredible motivation, and a sense of voice and power that only comes from focusing on and applying their learning to real-world situations. It's not enough to just talk about change, or practice in mock legislatures, writes Steve Zemelman. When students see adults actually listening to them with respect, that is when they begin to realize they have a voice and can make a difference in their world. Read From Inquiry to Action and find practical guidance that leads students to the heights you dream for them. After all, we all want our students to grow as engaged, thoughtful citizens in our communities. Steve blogs frequently about the ideas in From Inquiry to Action and about how educators around the US are applying them at his Civic Action in Schools blog.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A territory is an area of space which an animal guards as its exclusive possession and which it will defend against all members of its kind. In this revolutionary book Robert Ardrey takes a concept familiar to every biologist, brings together for the first time a fair sampling of all scientific observations of this form of behavior, and demonstrates that man obeys the same laws as does many other animal species. With African Genesis Mr Ardrey stirred up enough storm to last an author, one would think, for a lifetime. In The Territorial Imperative, however, he explores more deeply and incisively man's evolutionary nature and threatens even more forcefully some of our most precious assumptions. In a time when we attribute to man either no instincts at all, or instincts too weak to be of significance, Mr Ardrey's conclusions concerning the instinctual force exerted on human life by territory will undoubtedly raise an even greater storm. The author concludes, for example, that a common cause for war lies in our ignorance of man's animal nature - in particular, in the aggressor's ignorance of the enormous animal energies which his intrusion will release in a seemingly weak territorial defender. In a quite different vein, he concludes that family loyalty and responsibility, in men no less than in gibbons or beavers or robins, rests on joint attachment to a private territory. Perhaps the author's most far-reaching, most controversial conclusion is that morality - our willingness to make personal sacrifice for interests larger than ourselves - has its origins in dim evolutionary beginnings, is as essential to the life of the animal as to the lives of men, and could probably not exist in the human species without property either privately or jointly defended and the ultimate command of the territorial imperative. Like its predecessor, The Territorial Imperative is a work of wit, of literary wealth, of high adventure. Again the author draws on his inexhaustible knowledge of animal ways, and again his wife presents her intriguing sketches of animal life. But this time Mr Ardrey takes his readers on far deeper excursions into the ancient animal world, and on far deeper penetrations of the contemporary human wilderness. While evolutionary science has advanced markedly since Ardrey's times, his insights on human behavior have a timeless quality and The Territorial Imperative remains a classic reference for anyone wishing to begin an adventure exploring life's biggest questions. Praise for the 1966 edition: One of the most exciting books about the nature of man that has ever been presented. - Newsday Robert Ardrey's vision of man's future is as hopeful as any doctrinaire utopian's, and, in my opinion, a good deal more interesting. He ranks as the lyric poet of human evolution, a superb writer with a special vision. - E. O. Wilson One of the most intellectually exciting books of humanized sciences we have ever recommended in the Club's long history, a fascinating inquiry into the nature of the human animal, and an invaluable, as well as beautifully written, treatise on recent extensions of the boundaries of the biological sciences. - Clifton Fadiman, Book-of-the-Month Club News This is a fascinating, stimulating, fruitful, thought-provoking, and irritating book. - Dr Abraham Maslow, Department of Psychology, Brandeis University Few books are as fresh in concept, lively in style, and potentially important in understanding human behavior. - Wall Street Journal Ardrey belongs to the long and distinguished tradition of first-rate scientific amateurs. the love of science, especially biological science, animates every page. - The New Yorker. Ardrey, Berdine (illustrator).…

Paperback. Condition: Good. How do ordinary citizens, government officials, opinion leaders, or social scientists attempt to solve social problems? How competent are we at defining the problems, seeking information, and finding answers? In this important and controversial book, a distinguished social scientist meticulously analyzes our attempt to understand society so that we can reshape it. In so doing, he largely bypasses both epistemology and contemporary highly abstract theory on knowledge and society in order to acheive a far more concrete analysis of discourse and inquiry in social problem solving. There is a tragic discrepancy, argues Charles E. Lindblom, between our abilities to solve problems and the difficulty of the problems to be solved. We must make do with inadequate information and inconclusive analyses, for the task is less one of learning the truth than of proceeding in inquiry and decisions when the truth cannot be known. Lindblom discusses the many obstacles that prevent us from solving social problems, focusing in particular on learned incompetence. According to Lindblom, parents teach children not to think certain thoughts, and schools often engage more in indoctrination than education. Political rhetoric and commercial sales promotion feed a steady diet of misrepresentation. Social science does help. But because it is dependent on popular thought, it shares the impairments of thought found in both political figures and ordinary citizens. It also develops its own distinctive impairments and is to a degree crippled by its narrow view of scientific method--often more interested in proving than probing. Although social science can be improved in ways that Lindblom outlines in his book, social inquiry calls for such significant contributions from lay thought that it renders many conventional ideals of scientific problem solving inappropriate. Lindblom contends that the route to better social problem solving is not through either scientific or popular consensus or agreement, however much they are valued in the world of science and social science, but through a competition of ideas. The index of a society's competence, he states, is in its discord over ends, values, or purposes. As usual, Lindblom cuts through to the core of the issue: How is society to understand its central problems and challenges? With originality and courage, he takes on the social scientists and the policy analysts, and presents an inspiring picture of a self-guiding democracy that continuously deliberates over means and ends. A signal contribution.--Robert B. Reich, Harvard University.…
