Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm, viii, 141 pp. From the introduction - "This book investigates issues of youth, masculinity and nobility in five play-texts written around the end of the fifteenth and the beginning of the sixteenth centuries: Fulgens and Lucres and Nature, by Henry Medwall (both written in the 1490s), The Worlde and the Chylde… (c. 1509), The Interlude of Youth (c. 1514) and Calisto and Melebea (c. 1525). Each of these plays invites us to consider a young nobleman or men in the process of growing up and to categorize each as a failure or (more rarely) as a success in their attempts to make the transition to adult identities. As sociologists remind us, the depiction and analysis of problematic young people is often a symptom of adults' own deep-seated fears about identity and the threat of change. These Tudor plays also offer us many opportunities to examine the medieval origins of their thinking about identity and individuality, society and nation, since their representations of the young are affiliated with later medieval literary genres of various kinds. In other words, the plays are closely engaged with questions of what it means to be an adult and aristocratic man, and they suggest that notions of noble masculinity in particular were subject to complex processes of reformulation and debate in the late medieval period. " Contents include: Introduction; The interlude as a literary genre: 1 Defining Youth; 2 Young Masculinity and Late Medieval Discourses of Youth (Young men and sinfulness Young men and incivility Young men and bad government); 3 Noble Masculinity in the Interludes (Noble masculinity and noble male bodies Noble masculinity and the noble household); The interlude as a literary genre.
