La publication du Catalogue raisonné de Ipoustéguy est un événement qui aura autant de répercussions en France qu'à l'étranger. Il va permettre de prendre la mesure de cet immense artiste à travers les 537 oeuvres répertoriées et photographiées qui jalonnent son parcours depuis 1948 lorsqu' il se lança dans cette aventure en parfait autodidacte. Son premier marchand est Kahnweiler chez lequel il expose gouaches et dessins. Mais quand il lui révèle, en 1952, vouloir se consacrer uniquement à la sculpture, ce dernier lui explique que la sculpture ne se vend pas. Il persiste et débute par des assemblages de plâtre, de ciment et de fer cherchant à rompre avec l'abstraction dominante. Il y parvient en 1958 avec Casque fendu où il déclare avoir brisé l'oeuf de Brancusi. En 1962 il fait sa première exposition personnelle chez Claude Bernard avec lequel il collaborera jusqu'en 1985. C'est le début de sa fascination pour la représentation du corps humain nu. L'anatomie, le mouvement des muscles le fascinent. En rupture complète avec la sculpture de l'époque, il travaille le marbre à Carrare et crée d'extraordinaires sculptures expressives qu'il abandonnera après des deuils familiaux. Ultérieurement il mélange les effets du marbre avec ceux du bronze patiné et inaugure plusieurs sculptures monumentales (Grenoble, 1972 ; Berlin, 1979 ; Chambéry, 1981; Lyon, 1982 ; Paris, 1985). A ces allégories urbaines, Ipoustéguy substitue progressivement la mise en scène d'objets de l'environnement quotidien. En 1977, il reçoit le Grand Prix national des Arts. En 1978 une rétrospective de ses oeuvres est organisée rue Berryer à la Fondation Nationale des Arts plastiques et l'année suivante à la Kunsthalle de Berlin. Depuis, les expositions se succèdent dans le monde entier. Ses marbres sont exposés en permanence à Dun-sur-Meuse et sa place dans l'art contemporain ne cesse de s'affirmer comme une des premières.
