Der noch junge Sohn eines Rostocker Professors hat am Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts an der Universität Rostock Medizin studiert und mit 21 das medizinische Doktordiplom erworben, gefolgt von Studienreisen zu verschiedenen europäischen Universitäten. Durch Sturm endete eine Schiffsreise im Herbst 1696 an der schwedischen Küste, was er später als Fügung Gottes bezeichnete und dazu führte, dass er in Schweden als praktischer Arzt, Stadt- und Provinzialmedikus sowie als Jungunternehmer, dann als Medizinprofessor und Gutsbesitzer zu Ansehen und Reichtum gelangen konnte. Er begründete die Heilquelle Ramlösa bei Göteborg und wurde in den schwedischen Adelsstand erhoben. Eng verbunden mit ihm ist auch die Geschichte der 'Bibliotheca Döbeliana', die er der Lunder Akademischen Bibliothek schenke: Deren Bücher waren teils schon als Besitz des Vaters, eines Professors in Rostock, verzeichnet.Dieses Buch erscheint ebenfalls in schwedischer Sprache unter dem Titel: 'Johan Jakob von Döbeln - en svensk adelsman frċn Rostock - och grundandet av Bibliotheca Döbeliana Lundensis i juli 1718'.

Darunter werden in einem ornamentalen Rahmen die Heiligen Jakobus der Ältere und Johanna dargestellt. Der Heilige Jakobus (gest. um 44) war einer der Apostel Jesu, er ist u. a. Schutzpatron der Pilger und von Spanien. Sein Gedenktag ist der 25. Juli. Die Heilige Johanna, hier ist wohl Johanna von Valois (1464-1505) gemeint, gründete 1501 den Orden der Annuntiatinnen. Ihr Gedenktag ist der 4. Februar. Gewicht in Gramm: 500.
