Add to basket[Spy thrillers] JAMES BOND PAPERBACKS. Fourteen volumes. Octavos (18 x 12 x 18). A vintage set of Pan paperback printings in the classic 'X' series with cover artwork and bold 'James Bond' lettering after designs by Raymond Hawkey. A few titles with ink names/owner's inscriptions, one with pencil name, cheap paper stock toned as usual, acceptable soiling to covers, some rubs/wear to spines, no chips or tears to covers, generally presentable. A very good set. A few titles in this series are becoming rather scarce. Introduced on Thunderball in 1963, the stylish 'X' series featured the "iconic 'JAMES BOND' lettering, being larger and bolder than either the book title or the author's name. His [Hawkey's] cover art was applauded by Fleming and remained unchanged until 1969" (Gilbert, pp.36, 311). These are the familiar designs which a vast audience remembers vividly; many readers will have encountered the literary 007 for the very first time via a paperback from this series. Add to basketFirst Edition. [James Bond] COMPLETE BOOK CLUB EDITIONS. 11 volumes. Octavo (20 x 14 x 26cm). Publisher's hardbacks in illustrated dust-wrappers. The entire run of the popular British book club editions, which began in 1956 with 'Live and Let Die'. In total eleven of the fourteen James Bond titles were issued in this format and this set is complete as published. A used set in jackets; some spotting/toning to edges of text blocks, no ink writing, owner's rubber stamp to 'Live Twice', earlier jackets are worn; DAF, FRWL and DN have some chips and tears, later jackets better. Overall a good, used set. Ian Fleming's books were offered in this cheaper format, usually one year after the Cape first editions- some share the same Jonathan Cape artwork, but after the 'Thunderball' painting was damaged while on loan in America, Cape would no longer lend out their original art; as such the Book Club commissioned their own action-packed and striking cover designs.
