Hardcover. Condition: Very Good -. No Jacket. First Edition. Light normal scuffs, soils and edge wear. This volume contains the private correspondence between two lifelong friends and legal partners who were both graduates of Harvard Law School. The letters offer a unique "dual" view of the Civil War. John Chipman Gray served on the front lines (eventually becoming Judge Advocate General), while John Codman Ropes remained in Boston due to a physical disability, providing a civilian and political perspective from the home front. The correspondence covers military strategy, legal questions arising from the war, the character of various generals, and the social climate of the North during the conflict. Illustrated with portraits. Book.
