Nice copy of the first trade edition, preceded only by a privately printed edition of 100 copies in 1880. Set in the time of Charles I, Shorthouse's first (and best) novel explores contemporary issues within the Anglican and Catholic churches (arising primarily from the Oxford Movement). Macmillan, to whom the novel was introduced by Mrs. Humphrey Ward, considered it a work of genius and hastened to publication. The first edition of this work. Complete in two volumes. 'John Inglesant' is a historical novel set during the seventeenth century, following the Anglican protagonist who is fighting against the temptation to convert to Roman Catholicism. He becomes a courier to Charles I and is involved in the intrigues between the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England. The novel was very well received upon publication, and has been known as a philosophical romance. Joseph Henry Shorthouse was a novelist best known for this work, on which he spent ten years working on, and which made him famous at once. He also wrote 'The Little Schoolmaster Mark', 'Sir Percival', 'The Countess Eve', and 'A Teacher of the Violin'. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'Kathleen Mary Harouhan'.
