Item Description: London - Macmillan, 1881. Hardcover. Book Condition: GOOD. First edition. A first edition of thismuch admired historical novel, in two volumes. The work follows the eponymoushero's involvement in the intruiges between the Church of England and Roman Catholic Church in 17th century England. The book is one of ideas, despite its vigorous plot, which takes in the Battles of Edgehill and Naseby, as well as love and murder. It is replete with theological expostulation, which has maintained the work's appeal among certain readers. With an autograph letter to Professor Mahaffy, the Irish classicist and Polymathic scholar. He was tutor to Oscar Wilde at one point, who described him as his first and greatest teacher and was also a noted curmudgeon. Condition: In the original cloth with gilt titles to the spines. Externally, with some fading to the spines and general wear, including marking to the boards. The extremities are a little bumped. The front endpapers show evidence of previously having had plates affixed. The text block is untrimmed and the edges are a little dusty as a result. With a contemporary ink inscription to the half title of volume 1. Internally, a little age-toned and a little cockled, but otherwise clean. Generally firmly bound. Overall: GOOD. Item Description: Macmillan, 1881. 2 vols., roy. 8vo., First Trade Edition, on laid paper, free endpapers lightly browned; original dark red buckram, gilt backs, uncut, backstrips lightly faded (but all gilt wholly legible) else a remarkably bright, clean copy. Nice copy of the first trade edition, preceded only by a privately printed edition of 100 copies in 1880. Set in the time of Charles I, Shorthouse's first (and best) novel explores contemporary issues within the Anglican and Catholic churches (arising primarily from the Oxford Movement). Macmillan, to whom the novel was introduced by Mrs. Humphrey Ward, considered it a work of genius and hastened to publication. His instinct would seem to have been justified, for it became one of the most popular works of the late Victorian period selling over 80,000 copies. NCBEL III, p.1078; cf. Wolff, 6300.
