Ralph Robert Watts Sherman Stonor (only son of Lord and Lady Camoys of Stonor Park, Oxfordshire) and Jeanne Stourton (i.e. Dowager Lady Camoys)]. Undated publication, but c.1968. A lavish production printed by Will and Sebastian Carter at the Rampant Lions Press in Cambridge, but published in New York by the Chilmark Press. Illustrated paper-covered boards. The book is illustrated with ten drawings by John Piper engraved on wood by Reynolds Stone with a descriptive note by John Piper. Bound at the Cambridge University Press. One of 240 copies, of which this is numbered 121. Page edges rough cut. Interesting provenance: the Stonors were a landed aristocratic British couple, occasional patrons of artists such as Reynolds Stone - their daughter Julia Camoys Stonor wrote a memoir of Jeanne Stonor in 2006 alleging that her mother had murdered her husband in 1976, and that she was a Nazi sympathizer and had adulterous relationships with other men including Joachim von Ribbentrop. Some splitting to slipcase, which is fragile and in a perilous state. Book is in very good condition indeed.

Folio (497 x 400 mm), Publisher's patterned cloth, colour illustrations by Piper, housed in Publisher's slipcase. Published by the Hurtwood Press in association with the Tate Gallery, 1983. A fine copy in a near fine slipcase. This production shows John Piper's works of Stowe in Buckinghamshire; a place he regularly visited and had a great affection for. Of Stowe, Piper stated: "There is no end to the things one can paint there, and dream about. Mark Girouard, commented on Stowe: A diamond which flashes in a different way, depending on the angle one looks at it." John Egerton Christmas Piper CH (13 December 1903 28 June 1992) was an English painter, printmaker and designer of stained-glass windows and both opera and theatre sets. His work often focused on the British landscape, especially churches and monuments, and included tapestry designs, book jackets, screen-prints, photography, fabrics and ceramics. He was educated at Epsom College and trained at the Richmond School of Art followed by the Royal College of Art in London. He turned from abstraction early in his career, concentrating on a more naturalistic but distinctive approach, but often worked in several different styles throughout his career. Piper was an official war artist in World War II and his wartime depictions of bomb-damaged churches and landmarks, most notably those of Coventry Cathedral, made Piper a household name and led to his work being acquired by several public collections. Piper collaborated with many others, including the poets John Betjeman and Geoffrey Grigson on the Shell Guides, the potter Geoffrey Eastop and the artist Ben Nicholson. In his later years, he produced many limited-edition prints. (Tate Galleries.) Please contact us for shipping costs if ordering from outside the UK. Signed by Illustrator(s).
